CM’s orders: BMC starts to clean city of hoardings

New Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has ensured the removal of thousands of political posters and banners from the city. Acting on his orders, the BMC has removed 4,500 political banners, 400 posters and 100 flags in two days.

Officials of the licences department of the BMC worked overnight across all 24 wards.

On Friday, after taking over as Chief Minister, had announced that no congratulatory hoardings should be put up in the city. A similar plea was made by new Deputy CM Ajit Pawar. Municipal commissioner Swadheen Kshatriya then directed the licences department to remove all such hoardings.

An official said the congratulatory hoardings by the Congress and the NCP constituted the largest section among those removed, though there were some hoardings from other political parties too. About 200 illegal religious posters too were removed and the BMC has said the clean-up drive would continue.
