GHMC all set to clean up festival litter

HYDERABAD: In order to clear the additional garbage during the Ganesh and Ramzan festivals in the Greater Hyderabad limits, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has taken up a month-long special sanitation drive by employing sweeping units in different circles.

As against the lifting of garbage once in a day, it is going to be twice a day in eight circles of GHMC for next one month, GHMC Additional Commissioner (Health and Sanitation), Aleem Basha told Expresso.

Additional sweeping units are being pressed into service in corporation circles of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 18.

Each sweeping unit will consist of a tipper, sweeping unit members consisting of 19 workers.

Sufficient quantity of lime and bleaching powder is being stored and will be used as per the requirement. Out of the 2,580 garbage bins, about 900 bins filled with garbage will be lifted twice daily, he said.

A day after the idol immersion, i.e September 4, the GHMC on NTR Marg side and Tank Bund side will press as many as 40 mini tippers, six big tippers (20 tonne capacity vehicles), six front and loaders, 20 small sweeping machines and six big sweeping machines to clear the generated garbage including the iron scrap on the same day.

Hundreds of small and medium Ganesh mandapams are likely to immerse their idols on the third, fifth, seventh and ninth days respectively. GHMC will press additional manpower and vehicles to transport idol material and generated garbage from NTR Marg and Tank Bund sites. Four Front and Loaders and eight 10-tonner vehicles will be utilised, he said.
