Civic body to monitor eateries

Staff Reporter

The City Corporation will monitor the working of eateries and take action against those found violating health and hygiene rules. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of health inspectors, presided over by the health officer here on Friday.

The meeting discussed inspections conducted in hotels over the past week and preparations for Onam celebrations. Over the past week, 84 hotels were inspected and 47 of these were issued notices for immediate clean-up and renovation. Those found dumping garbage in public places would be penalised. Action was being taken against 22 individuals found guilty. As many as 95 shops had been found using plastic carry bags of the banned specification. Street vendors had been given licences to operate in parts of the city during Onam. United Democratic Front (UDF) councillor R. Harikumar said UDF members would boycott the Onam celebrations of the Corporation on Saturday in protest against a notice put up by Corporation officials levelling charges against UDF councillors.
