Sanitation woes continue for six months in East Patel Nagar

PATNA: Even months after the problem erupted, Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has failed to address the sanitation issue facing the residents of East Patel Nagar. For over six months, sewage water seeps into nearly 100 houses located on either side of the road. In the absence of regular maintenance of the sewerage line, it has got choked, giving a foul smell and becoming the breeding ground of mosquitoes.

Vimal Pandey of Road No 4, East Patel Nagar, said, "Several complaints were made to PMC officials but the waterlogging continues. Some sanitation workers come to the locality whenever we complain to the ward councillor, Pramila Singh."

R K Thakur, a retired government official, said, "We have been living here for more than last 20 years. But this year, a vacant plot is continuously under two-feet-deep sewage water. The land has become a breeding ground of mosquitoes."

Another resident Suresh Verma said, "Life has become miserable for all of us. Dirty water is overflowing in the backyards of our houses and water also seeps through the walls. Moreover, no fogging or sanitation service is provided by the PMC."

"Several complaints were made to the PMC authorities in this connection but to no avail. They came in January with some temporary arrangement. We have also informed the sanitation officer concerned as well as the mayor from time to time about the hellish situation, but they have paid no heed to our complaints," said another resident.

"A pumping set was used for more than a week, but it hardly worked for more than 5 to 10 hours. They (PMC officials) sometimes claim that they don't have sufficient number of pumping sets and sometimes that they lack manpower," said a resident.

Shashank Shekhar Sinha, circle officer, New Capital Circle ( NCC) and additional commissioner, PMC, said, "I have received several complaints and also personally visited the affected area. The main chamber of the area is broken, so the sewage water is accumulating in a vacant plot. A contract has been awarded and the construction work will start soon."
