Stray cattle will be sent to cowsheds outside UT

CHANDIGARH: The municipal corporation finance and contract committee (F&CC) on Thursday decided to send stray cattle to "gaushalas" outside the city.

The decision has been taken in the wake of growing public angst against the stray cattle menace that has been causing road accidents.

For each cow, the MC will pay Rs 2,000 to these cowsheds. Rs 20 lakh have been earmarked for the purpose. In a meeting, it was decided that 500 cows will be sent to Dabar Gaushala in Najafgarh in Delhi and 50 to Gau Sewa Gaushala in Garhshanka, Punjab.

Later, as per requirement, such cattle might be sent to other cowsheds too.

"We will start sending the stray cows to these gaushalas as soon as possible. This will check the menace to a large extent," said Mukesh Bassi, a member of F&CC.

MayorSubash Chawla said, "Finally, we have decided to shift the cows. According to the initial figures, over 1,000 such cows will be sent to the cowsheds."
