Officials told to ensure proper sanitation
The Mayor chaired a meet with officials a day after the Mukhya Nagar Adhikari had said that the corporation will take over sanitation works in 30 of the 60 wards under MCD as the DVWM was not working satisfactorily.
On Monday the MNA, Ashok Kumar had said that the corporation will take back the sanitation work from the DVWM in 30 wards as the company was failing to facilitate the desired level of sanitation.
The municipal workers would facilitate sanitation in these wards, he had said. Responding to this the company officials had said that they were being falsely accused of inefficiency. They would have to reconsider the contract if the MNA executed his decision, the officials had said.
On Tuesday, the Mayor chaired a meeting with the MCD and company officials and pulled them up. Talking to The Pioneer, Chamoli stressed on the need for the MCD and DVWM working together to ensure the desired sanitation level.
“The MCD cannot turn away from its administrative responsibilities. More than 1,000 MCD workers are employed for sanitation work and the corporation officials are also supposed to regularly monitor the sanitation work both by our staff and by the company. This should not be a case of the MCD versus the company because at this time the company is a co-partner of the corporation. I have directed officials of the corporation and company to pull up their socks and work efficiently in coordination,” said the Mayor.
Referring to the protest by citizens following improper dumping of garbage around the existing municipal trenching ground at Sahastradhara Road, the Mayor said that the wrongly dumped waste was being removed and the road to the trenching ground is being cleared to ensure that the collected garbage is dumped in the designated place.
Observers point out that this is not the first time that the Mayor has pulled up officials and directed them to work efficiently on the sanitation front.
However, sources inform that factors like resources shortage and alleged corruption are preventing the MCD and DVWM from facilitating the desired level of sanitation in the State capital.
