To ensure that the most popular tourist spot in the city – the beaches – are clean and attractive the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) plans to organise 24x7 cleaning operations there apart from ensuring a dress code for vendors.

Addressing the media here on Monday, GVMC Commissioner M V Satyanarayana said that the civic body was according top priority to maintenance of beaches and ensuring that a committee comprising zonal commissioner, superintendent engineer and divisional engineer was constituted.

Garbage bins

The GVMC plans to implement a dress code for all the vendors on the city beaches apart from giving a garbage bin to each of them to ensure that the waste generated by customers is not scattered on the beach.

The vendors would have to ensure that the garbage is cleared immediately.

Noting that most of the facilities provided in parks on the beach for tourists were in a bad shape the Commissioner said that the civic authorities are taking steps for their immediate repair and replacement wherever required.

Landscaping

Elaborating on the proposals for the city’s beautification, he said landscaping would be taken up under the Asilmetta flyover at an estimated cost of Rs 70 lakh.

Steps are being taken to demolish 150 structures that have been identified by the engineering department as dangerous and on the verge of collapse, he said.

With the merger of Anakapalli and Bheemili municipalities and 10 other gram panchayats the population of the GVMC had increased to 19 lakhs.

The GVMC has sent a proposal for formation of 81 wards in view of the inclusion of newer areas, he said.

The notification of new wards, receiving objections and finalisation of the wards could take up to three months, he added.
