VMC looks to revamp street sweeping in Vadodara

VADODARA: Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) will conduct a survey roping in an agency for the manual street sweeping conducted by sanitary workers in the city. The civic body is looking to conduct the survey in wake of the fact that the city has grown over the years and the size of roads has also changed.

The sanitary workers called as 'safai karmacharis' conduct sweeping of the city's streets in their respective beats. A proposal for roping in the consultant prepared by VMC states that the present allocation of beats and workers was years old.

The proposal states that the system was set when the city had an area of 108.22 square kilometre. This has now increased to 158.7 sq km. The proposed survey will measure the existing beats and reorganize it as per the present needs of the city. The agency will have to finish the task in three months.

The proposal states that the survey will have to be conducted as per the Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000, and Solid Waste Management Manual guidelines. It adds that the need for such a survey was also mentioned by National Commission for Safai Karmachari chairperson Kamala Gurjar during a visit to the city.
