Kozhikode corporation awards tenders to cover open drainages

KOZHIKODE: The Kozhikode corporation has taken steps to cover the open drains and replace the dilapidated slabs and footpaths in its limit.

They have already awarded tenders of seven works to cover the open slabs and renovation of dilapidated drainages in its limit. The works will be carried out under the 12th five year projects prepared for the financial year 2012 . The council meeting held on December 10 has approved the works. The city corporation has awarded tenders to carry out covering of open drains at an estimated cost of Rs 19.34 lakh.

The works include renovation of Thaikkaduthazham drain footpath (Rs 4 lakh), renovation of Netaji Cross Road footpath (Rs2.40 lakh), P K Thodi Colony footpath (Rs 2 lakh) and rest of the fund is for covering the open drains in corporation limit. The tendered work will be completed before the end of the current financial year.

The city corporation has set-aside fund for the drainage works following the death of a 64-year-old woman who fell into an open drain near the Kozhikode railway station. The public works department then covered all the open slabs on the drainages under its limit soon after the incident.

The civic body has set-aside around Rs 2.18 crore for the renovation and replacement of old slabs in the budget besides allocations in the 12th five year plan.

Of the Rs 2.18 crore, Rs 24.61 lakh will be utilized for the replacement of covering slab on drainages, Rs 1.62 crore renovation of drainages and rest for the renovation and construction of drainages.
