Sanitation drive held in Sector 19
An awareness campaign-cum-sanitation drive was flagged off by area councillor Anju Beniwal from Sector 19 on Tuesday. The drive was held under the partnership initiative programme where apart from cleaning the area, residents were educated about upkeep of their surroundings.
Safaikaramcharis of sanitation wing took out a rally disseminating awareness by carrying placards depicting the message for the residents to cooperate in sustaining the sanitation of their sectors.
MC team inspects southern sectors
A team of officials and councillors of the Municipal Corporation inspected ward number 10 today and found the area lacking in a number of facilities. The ward comprises Sectors 41 and 42 as well as Attawa, Badheri and Buterla villages of the city. The team found the Sector-41 community centre in a pitiable state. The green belts in the area were also in a deplorable state. It was decided that the area would be spruced up at the earliest.
Residents meet UT finance secretary, highlight violations in city
In a meeting with UT Finance Secretary Sanjay Kumar, the Chandigarh Residents’ Social Welfare Federation highlighted various issues including encroachments in markets of various sectors such as Sectors 15, 19 and 22. They also highlighted violation of norms by tenants, installation of security gates on V-5 roads, parking problems in residential areas and pick and choose policy regarding demolition and regularisation of need-based changes made by residents. The CEO of the Chandigarh Housing Board, UT Deputy Commissioner, Chief Architect and Chief Engineer were also present in the meeting.
Traffic awareness programme held at MCM DAV
The NSS Unit of the MCM DAV College conducted a traffic awareness programme on the college campus on Tuesday. H S Doon SP (Traffic & Security) was the chief guest while Vijay Kumar, DSP Traffic, was the guest of honour on the occasion. Doon encouraged the students to wear helmets and made them aware about traffic and road rules.
Computer lab opens at Mohali Govt College
MOHALI: A hi-tech computer laboratory was opened at Government College in Phase VI here on Tuesday. Deputy Commissioner Prabhjot Singh Mand inaugurated the laboratory. Underlining the need for computer education in the present system, Mand assured all possible help for further development of the laboratory and any other need of the college. Principal Nirmal Gupta welcomed the guests and said the laboratory was established with the help of government help and the poor students would be provided special concession for attaining computer education. Science department head Amarjeet Kaur proposed the vote of thanks.
Grants worth Rs 60 lakh given to villages
MOHALI: District Planning Committee Chairman N K Sharma distributed cheques of Rs 60 lakh as grants for development works to several village panchayats in the district on Tuesday. He said grants of Rs 1.06 crore were received for the rural development in the district under the first phase. Reiterating that the state government was committed for the overall development of the state and provide facilities on a par with the cities, Sharma exhorted the village panchayats to use properly the development grants and undertake development works without any prejudice keeping in view the public interest at large.
Brahma Kumaris celebrate World Peace Day
MOHALI: The local branch of the Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya organised a special function to celebrate the World Peace Day on its campus in Phase VII on Tuesday. In her address, the in-charge of Rajyoga Centres in Mohali and Ropar circle, Brahma Kumari Prem Lata inspired hundreds of devotees to follow the path of unity, peace, truth, love, non-violence, harmony and universal brotherhood. She stressed the need to adopt value-based lifestyle, which was the only way to infuse divinisation in this peace-less world. “Mere western materialistic approach can drag the humanity towards destruction,” she opined, while adding that self transformation would lead to world transformation.
‘Urban Estate becoming unsafe by the day’
PATIALA: Residents of Urban Estate in Patiala have complained of increased cases of crime in their area in the last few months, which they claim has caused has a “fear psychosis” among them. Under the banner of Residents’ Welfare Association of Urban Estate Phase II, the residents have come together to demand more security. Association president K S Bhattiwal said the police had, so far, not even solved a single incident of crime and residents were living under constant fear. Detailing the incidents of crime in the area, he said, on January 15, robbers looted the house of one Anup Kumar Modi, after locking the occupants. A week prior to this, two thefts were reported in the Radhey Shyam and Tung Nath mandirs, in which thieves escaped with the golaks, he added. Bhattiwal rued that snatching incidents had also become routine.
CITU pays homage to Jyoti Basu
The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) workers held a condolence meeting to pay tribute to CPM leader Jyoti Basu, who passed away in Kolkata on January 17. The leaders of union who had remembered him as one of the tallest leaders of the communist and left movement in the country, said the void left by the veteran could never be filled.
