Mayor for garbage-free city

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Delhi Mayor Kanwar Sain has directed the Municipal Commissioner to ensure that the Capital is made garbage-free ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

He has also asked the Municipal Commissioner to prepare a master plan for achieving the target.

“The MCD should launch a two-pronged strategy to deal with the situation. On the one hand it should educate the public and make them aware of their civic duties, while on the other it should set deterrents so that offenders are discouraged from creating unsanitary conditions,” Dr. Sain said.

“As far as educating the masses and creating civic awareness among them is concerned, the MCD has already launched a sanitation awareness campaign which would be intensified in the coming months. Under the campaign, we are trying to create awareness through popular characters like ‘Kuda Kumar’, ‘Thu Thu Kumar’, ‘Poly Uncle’ and ‘Poly Aunty’,” he added.

The Mayor told the Municipal Commissioner that in addition to creating awareness the civic body should also intensify prosecution action against those who spread unhygienic conditions in the city. He urged the municipal magistrates to pay special attention in this regard.

Dr. Sain also impressed upon the Delhi Government to clear the Delhi Cleanliness and Sanitation By-laws, 2009, pending with it for the past six months.

Notification

“The MCD had approved it in May 2009 and subsequently sent it for approval and notification to the Delhi Government. The proposal envisages a fine of Rs.200 for littering on roads and streets, spitting, urinating, washing utensils in public places and for not keeping the house drain clean,” he added.
