District rolls back catch cattle scheme

Panchkula: The Panchkula Municipal Corporation has rolled back the scheme of rewarding the public who would help them catch stray cattle.

Executive officer, MC, K K Jain said people did not show any enthusiasm to be paid Rs 500 for catching cattle.

After receiving regular complaints about stray cattle across the city, officials had floated the scheme in December hoping people would come forward in containing the menace.

“We did not receive a single case, and the public did not show any interests. Hence we had to call off the scheme. In case someone shows some interest, we may revive it,” said Jain.

This is not the first time the MC’s plan to handle stray cattle has failed to generate desired results. A few years ago, the corporation had hired a contractor to catch stray cattle. The contract was never renewed as he “did not deliver good results.”

The MC has been planning to construct a cattle pen in Pinjore over 12 acres of land. While earlier it did not have the requisite finances, former councillors rue that with everything in place now, the project should be given a go ahead.

“We had got a budget of over Rs 1.76 crore sanctioned for the cattle pen. The land has also been transferred to the MC.

Putting the cattle at a proper place is an equally important issue as getting the city rid of them. The MC should start with the construction at the earliest,” said Ravinder Rawal, former president, MC.
