Corp Launches Cleaning Drive

With hardly one week left for the offering of the  ‘Pongala’ at Attukal Bhagavathy Temple here, the capital city has geared up to receive thousands of devotees flocking to the temple from all parts of the state.

The City Corporation has launched several drives to clean up the city before the festival day and taken measures for the timely disposal of the organic and plastic waste generated that day.

In the previous years, the total garbage generated during the festival had exceeded 10 tonnes. This year, prior to the Pongala, the Corporation has started the cleaning activity in the wards close to the temple by splitting them into various zones.

The first was a mass cleaning activity conducted in the Kamaleswaram ward, a neighbouring area of the temple. The Samagra Sucheekarana Yajnam organised by Kamaleswaram councillor M B Reshmi along with the citizens was inaugurated by V Sivankutty MLA on Sunday with Health Standing Committee chairperson S Pushpalatha as the chief guest. According to Reshmi, as many as 200 local people volunteered in the cleaning drive along with those who were assigned by the Corporation. “In the half-day-long programme, the students of Kamaleswaram school, members of the residents’ associations, factory employees, social workers and Corporation contingency employees cleaned up the roads and premises,” she said.

A review meeting had been convened by Mayor K Chandrika on Thursday to evaluate the arrangements for Pongala.

It was decided that the voluntary organisations that offer food to the devotees during the festival should process the garbage they generate on their own. Plastic disposable cups, plastic and thermocole plates should not be used. Health Officer and other officials were given directions to carry out the cleaning activities in a time-bound manner.

Last year, the waste generated in the 29 wards, which were designated as the festival zone, were taken away in trucks and buried by the City Corporation.

Cuncolim Municipal Council to undertake dog census

CUNCOLIM: Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC) has kicked off a 'dog census' campaign in all 10 wards of the municipal council.

The council has instructed its poundkeeper to carry out a census of domestic dogs in wards.

Chairperson Devendra Dessai told TOI that the council has already completed the census in three wards and the remaining wards will be completed within 15 days. CMC has asked all dog owners to register their dogs with the census team. The CMC wants to identify the stray dogs and wants to control the stray dog population.

It has made an agreement with the NGO, Goa Animal Welfare Trust, which is being paid 700 per trip and 50 per dog for sterilization.

Dessai told TOI that the CMC's objective is to make Cuncolim a 'zero rabbies' town.

He appealed to all citizens to cooperate with the council in curbing the stray dog menace in the town. The council is also working upon a scheme to start a dog shelter at the Cuncolim industrial estate. It is learnt that the Goa Animal Welfare Trust has not visited Cuncolim town over the last two months. The council has sent them three remainders but the NGO has failed to act upon the agreement, said the CMC sources.

24x7 drinking water, toilets a must at fuel stations on highways

PUNE: All fuel stations along national highways are required to have round-the-clock drinking water and toilet facilities as well as display boards stating that these facilities are available.

The Union ministry of road transport and highways recently issued a circular in this regard to all chief secretaries of states, chief engineers and other officials of public works departments and all units of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

The ministry said that the unified guidelines for access permission to fuel stations had been issued in July 2013. It said it is mandatory in the licence deed agreement to have drinking water and toilet facilities at all fuel stations as per approved drawings and specifications, to the full satisfaction of the highway administration.

"A display board showing availability of such facilities shall be installed before the entry to the fuel station," says the circular.

A senior official of NHAI, Pune division, said all fuel stations on the Pune-Satara stretch of NH-4 are being inspected, and similar checks will be carried out on the Pune-Solapur highway (NH-9).

"We will notify the fuel stations about the shortcomings after our inspection and give the owners and managers of such fuel stations some time to take appropriate action. We will create a database of the fuel stations and facilities," the official said.

The ministry has directed all the departments concerned to bring to its notice all instances of non-availability of these facilities.

Frequent users of highways say that such facilities are available at some fuel stations. "However, there aren't any display boards and people have to ask fuel station workers about it. Also, the facilities need to be maintained properly," said one highway user.

All fuel stations on the Pune-Satara stretch of NH-4 are being inspected. Similar checks will be carried out on the Pune-Solapur highway (NH-9). We will notify the fuel stations about the shortcomings after our inspection and give the owners and managers of such fuel stations some time to take appropriate action.
