Mumbai : BMC to inspect surrogacy clinics in one day

Starting July, the civic body’s health department will survey assisted reproduction technology (ART) clinics and genetic counselling centres.

The decision came after nonprofit Lek Ladki Abhyaan, led by advocate Varsha Deshpande, met additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar.

Last week, Deshpande had registered a complaint under the Pre Conception Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, asking the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to probe news reports stating actor Shahrukh Khan and his wife were having a baby boy through surrogacy. Sex determination is illegal in India.

“The delegation has brought to our notice that there are many groups operating on the fringe that may not be registered,” said Mhaiskar. “We will hopefully finish the survey in two weeks.”

Following the inquiry, unconfirmed reports indicate the couple has commissioned the surrogacy in London.

“As long as they hold Indian passports, the law is applicable to them. But if the doctor is from a country that allows sex determination, the Indian government cannot do much,” said advocate Amit Karkhani.`

Deshpande claimed the BMC had no records of IVF centres. “Jaslok has not submitted records for ten years. This shows the actor could have got the surrogacy and nothing was recorded.”

Supersuction sewerage cleaning begins

The project for cleaning sewerage with supersuction process — for which Rs 2.34 crore were passed at the MC budget meet this March — finally began on Monday, so did politics over the event.

While Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria inaugurated the work in ward number 73 on Monday evening, SAD MLA (Ludhiana south) Balwinder Singh Bains organised a separate event in the morning in ward number 75 to tell the residents about the project. However, it was during the Mayor's event in the evening that the actual work started with the Delhi-based company beginning the sewerage cleaning through supersuction method.

Talking to Ludhiana Newsline, Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria, who inaugurated the project on GT Road near Hanuman Mandir, said, "In the first phase of Rs 2.34 crore project, we have started with cleaning of a 1.8-km stretch from Hanuman Mandir to Eve Line Industries. This stretch is costing MC Rs 54 lakh."

Asserting that the stretch would take almost a month to be completed, he said, "Industrialists from the area like Campa Cola Chowk and surrounding areas met him many times with their demand to solve sewerage problem and thus this supersuction will bring a great relief to the sewerage problem in the area."

Asked if he was aware of the programme organised by MLA Balwinder Singh Bains in ward number 75, he said, "I heard about some programme but I don't think it was related to supersuction system in anyway."

He said once this stretch was cleaned successfully, other sewerage lines would be recognised for cleaning.

Explaining the system, he said that machines used in process would push the material in the sewerage which was not possible through manual labour and thus would make sewerage cleaner.

While MLA Balwinder Singh Bains, from SAD, was not available for comment, councillor Sarabjit Singh Garcha, who is too from the SAD and in whose ward (75) Bains held an event, said: "We held our programme near Dhandari Kalan Old bridge and MLA told people about the supersuction system which will clean the sewerage."

However, he added that the mayor must be having some other engagement if he preferred to attend the event in ward 73.

Changing the way people in Delhi go through their exercise regime, the New Delhi Municipal Council is working on setting up gymnasiums in open parks. Assured that people prefer to work-out in open spaces, rather than the confined ones, council is experimenting with the gymnasiums in community parks.

This experiment has been initiated NDMC's own club-cum-institute — Palika Services Officers' Institute (PSOI).

This is first of its kind experiment in NDMC area where professional fitness equipment will be put up in parks to provide an outdoor gym to residents. Fitness equipment have been used by the members at PSOI too. The equipment placed in PSOI are a body-shaper, abs-shaper, back-shaper and shoulder-shaper.

The back-shaper works on shoulder, upper and lower back muscles and builds up torso, arm muscles and back shoulders. The shoulder-shaper develops and strengthens shoulder muscles. It also helps in reducing cervical problems.

Abs shaper works on entire abdomen and improves digestion and metabolism, whereas body-shaper increases leg strength and endurance level, an official said. "The gym in the open has received an overwhelming response from the members," the official said.

According to the official, the experiments has highlighted the need for a gym in the parks for people of all ages. "There are many who want to work-out, but dislike confined gyms or gyms in basement with loud music. There are senior citizens who want to use fitness equipment, but cannot go to gyms. There are children who are yet to develop the habit of working out. But we know that all these people go to parks and gardens and that is the reason why we are planning to put these equipment out in the open," the official said.

The equipment, officials said, do not require much maintenance and do not run on electricity. "These equipment are rugged and made for all weather. These are fixed in the ground, so security is not much of an issue. These equipment are mechanical and do not need electricity. Also, people can enjoy the morning or evening weather while working out," the official said.
