Few takers for Government initiatives against polythene

Efforts to make Ranchi a polythene free city saw a shaky start when a workshop organised to spread awareness among stakeholders attracted few. Neither the concerned officials nor the common people showed the desired level of interest.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of RMC, Deepankar Panda, Deputy Mayor of RMC, Sanjeev Vijayvargiya and some other officials were present in the seminar but chief guest and Principal Secretary of Urban Development Department Arun Kumar Singh gave the programme a slip. Though the RMC has made arrangements for 500 but it could gather barely 100 odd. Use of polythene bags with thickness of less than 40 micron and measuring 18x12 inches in size is being made penal as per a Government order in the State.

Town planner Gajanand Ram tried his best to understand the participants about the disadvantage of using the polythene bags and encouraged the use of paper and clothes made bags. He asked to share experiences.

Deputy Mayor of RMC Sanjiv Vijayvargiya said, “We have decided to divide the city into six segments and ward members of the respective areas will play major role in spreading awareness for stopping the use of polythene bags of below the described thickness and dimension”. The main motive of this seminar was to give the city people an awakening call for dropping down the use of  polythene bags of above mentioned thickness and size and to run it like a movement in the city but the effort made did not show much zeal  and enthusiasm a very cold reaction came out of it.

But it has not been available with the Kasuali-based Central Research Institute in Himachal Pradesh, the only government-run production unit for the vaccine.

Dr Suhas Kulkarni, AMC medical officer (health), said the vaccination was suspended for the past four months. "Every month, around 800 persons visit the AMC for the vaccine," he said. He said that while earlier the vaccine would cost Rs 500, it would now cost Rs 1,200 as it is being procured from a private sector firm which imports if trom abroad. Kulkarni said travellers would have to bring the vaccine from Mumbai and only government hospitals could administer them. Also, it would not be available over the counter now, he added.

Army, public, BBMP join hands to clean up ring road

The Inner Ring Road, stretching from  Ejipura signal to Domlur, is set to receive a much-needed spell of maintenance. The stretch has long been in a dilapidated condition.

Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner Siddaiah who was present during the intensive cleaning drive on Sunday assured the public and army staff from the ASC Centre (North) who use the stretch that additonal initiatives will be taken to improve the road’s condition. “Directions will be given to BBMP officials to maintain the road’s footpath and also to make sure that it remains clean,” he said.

Organised by Manpreet Kaur Juneja, who roped in the BBMP, the ASC Centre as well as officials from the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (Bescom), the cleanliness drive was witness to nearly 200 participants who painted footpath edges, cleared trash from the road and removed weeds from footpath. This was the first cleanliness campaign in which that army troops from ASC Centre (North), members of the public and BBMP officials worked together.

“The road has been neglected for a long time,” Juneja said. “The footpath is in an especially bad condition with trash and weeds accumulated on the edges. We hope that the road will be restored to its proper condition at the earliest.”
