'Dera followers cleaning up Chandigarh would harm interests'

CHANDIGARH: Taking up a petition filed against move of the municipal corporation allowing followers of controversial Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh to clean Chandigarh, the Punjab and Haryana high court, on Thursday, summoned record from Chandigarh municipal corporation.

Orders were passed by a division bench headed by Chief Justice A K Sikri in the wake of a petition filed by an organization "Lawyers for Human Rights International (LHRI)". The petitioner had claimed that a proposal seeking permission of more than one lakh followers of the dera head was with the mayor. Further hearing in the case would be on February 27.

The petitioner had submitted that since Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and his followers are being tried at the Panchkula court for rape and murder charges, MC's move will harm interest of justice and will have an adverse effect on a fair trial. The petitioner had also submitted details of various cases in which dera head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been involved. It was also stated that a sadhu, Hans Raj Chauhan, who was a follower of Dera Sacha Saudha, alleged castration by the dera head and his medical report, conducted by Government Multi-speciality Hospital, Sector 16, had confirmed the same.

A total sum of Rs.1 crore will be spent on the units.

To standardise the supply of quality fish varieties to consumers, the Kerala State Cooperative Federation for Fisheries Development (Matsyafed) will set up five modern fish-vending booths in selected locations of the city.

The construction of air-conditioned booths, with facility to maintain a hygienic ambience, will start within a couple of weeks and start functioning within a period of two months.

A total sum of Rs.1 crore will be spent to set up fish- vending units in the selected locations and to open a base station at Puthiyappa harbour for sorting out fish varieties and sending it to the vending booths concerned. According to Matsyafed officials, a total of 10 modern fish- vending booths will come up in the city this year itself in a phased manner.

The five booths considered in the first phase will be opened at Arayidathupalam, Taj Road premise, Link Road, Eranhipalam and Tiruvannur.

The support of various self- help groups will be sought to operate the booths and maintain a clean ambience at the outlet.

Matsyafed Manager T.V. Ramesan said an amount of Rs.5 lakh would be spent for each booth to ensure its proper functioning. Fish waste would never be a problem for the natives, as arrangements would be made at the base station to treat it, he added.

The base station at Puthiyappa will also have superior storage facilities and machines to sort out the good quality fish items. A major portion of the fund will be spent on developing the base station as per the government project.

Mr. Ramesan said the amount for the project was sanctioned by the government under its recession package for the welfare of fishermen community in the district.

A series of other welfare schemes too were on the card, which would be announced after the completion of the latest project, he added.

Sanitation woes continue for six months in East Patel Nagar

PATNA: Even months after the problem erupted, Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has failed to address the sanitation issue facing the residents of East Patel Nagar. For over six months, sewage water seeps into nearly 100 houses located on either side of the road. In the absence of regular maintenance of the sewerage line, it has got choked, giving a foul smell and becoming the breeding ground of mosquitoes.

Vimal Pandey of Road No 4, East Patel Nagar, said, "Several complaints were made to PMC officials but the waterlogging continues. Some sanitation workers come to the locality whenever we complain to the ward councillor, Pramila Singh."

R K Thakur, a retired government official, said, "We have been living here for more than last 20 years. But this year, a vacant plot is continuously under two-feet-deep sewage water. The land has become a breeding ground of mosquitoes."

Another resident Suresh Verma said, "Life has become miserable for all of us. Dirty water is overflowing in the backyards of our houses and water also seeps through the walls. Moreover, no fogging or sanitation service is provided by the PMC."

"Several complaints were made to the PMC authorities in this connection but to no avail. They came in January with some temporary arrangement. We have also informed the sanitation officer concerned as well as the mayor from time to time about the hellish situation, but they have paid no heed to our complaints," said another resident.

"A pumping set was used for more than a week, but it hardly worked for more than 5 to 10 hours. They (PMC officials) sometimes claim that they don't have sufficient number of pumping sets and sometimes that they lack manpower," said a resident.

Shashank Shekhar Sinha, circle officer, New Capital Circle ( NCC) and additional commissioner, PMC, said, "I have received several complaints and also personally visited the affected area. The main chamber of the area is broken, so the sewage water is accumulating in a vacant plot. A contract has been awarded and the construction work will start soon."
