Vadodara Municipal Corporation eyes major revamp of health services

VADODARA: Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) is eyeing a major revamp in the health services it provides in the city. The civic body is eyeing to set up new health centres in the city and upgrade the existing facilities.

The civic body currently operates 30 health facilities in the city which include 17 urban health centres (UHC), four full-time clinics, seven part-time clinics and two staff dispensaries. The number of these facilities and the staff of the health department, has, however, remained the same since around 25 years.

The health department has moved a proposal stating that an six additional UHCs and relocating some existing ones so that the entire population of the city can be covered in a better way. It has proposed that for a population of 50,000 persons there should be a UHC.

It has been suggested that out patient departments should be operated at the health centres twice a day. It has also suggested that medicines and pathological examination services should be provided at the centres besides other facilities.

The health department has also suggested that three additional deputy health officers besides the existing single post must be appointed. Each of these officers will supervise work in a zone of the civic body.

The proposal put before the standing committee has, however, raised some eyebrows as some VMC officials feel that it should have been moved through the deputy municipal commissioner (administration) and not directly by the health department. The standing committee of the civic body will now have to take a call regarding the issue.

Gurgaon municipality yet to finalize sanitation contractors for fourth zone

GURGAON: Even though four months have passed since the process to award a sanitation contract for all its four zones began, the municipal corporation has not been able to complete it till now.

The process ideally should get over in a fortnight. This inordinate delay, as sources indicate, is because of rampant corruption among officials who tried to ensure that a tainted agency gets the contract of all the four zones. As reported by TOI on several occasions, the agency, Balaji Security Services, purposefully quoted the least amount so that they get the contract, even as officials themselves admit that the amount quoted is not enough to engage the required number of sanitation workers and machinery in all the four zon

"After a lot of hue and cry was raised over Balaji getting the contract for all the four zones, the MCG officials and councillors went into damage control mode and have since been trying to convince the agency owner to give up his claim on at least two zones. In fact, they even "forced" him to sign a declaration stating that he voluntarily wants to give up the contract for two zones. All this is leading to the delay," said a source. Officially though, the chairman of the sanitation committee insists that nothing is amiss in the tendering process.

"We have finalized the contract for three zones. While the sanitation work in Zone 1 and 3 will be done by Balaji agency, the work in Zone 2 will be done by the agency that is already doing the job of door-to-door garbage collection. We have not been able to finalize the agency for Zone 4 as all the agencies that participated in the tendering process have quoted almost the same price for this zone. Since there are lots of discrepancies, we have decided to go for re-tendering and this process might take another four months," said Lakhpat Kataria, chairman, MCG sanitation committee.

Sanitation campaign in Bhubaneswar

BHUBANESWAR: A special sanitation drive got underway in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday. The cleaning drive, which will continue for 15 days, was jointly inaugurated by new BMC commissioner Sanjib Kumar Mishra and mayor A N Jena. On the first day, intensive drain and road cleaning activities were carried out in 26, 32, 33 and 34 wards. "All the 60 wards will be covered in the drive," Mishra said.

Sources said the health department has provided 125 volunteers to BMC for the job. The event will serve dual purposes-spreading awareness about environment and sensitizing people about steps to prevent malaria, filaria and dengue. Resident welfare associations and schoolchildren would be involved in the drive.

Volunteers would distribute leaflets among people to keep the environment clean. Thrust of the sanitation drive would be cleaning of drains. Now, all eyes are on the continuation of the drive as the BMC discontinued the much-vaunted "clean Bhubaneswar" campaign in the past. Though chief minister Naveen Patnaik had inaugurated the campaign in Saheed Nagar last year, it did not move ahead thereafter.
