Corporators to kickstart tobacco drive

MUMBAI: The civic body has tied up with Tata Memorial hospital to conduct an awareness on tobacco in 24 administrative wards.Corporators will be trained by the hospital to create anti-tobacco awarenes in their wards. According to the figures submitted  by  Tata Memorial hospital at the BMC's general body meeting on Tuesday,10 lakh people are suffering from cancer and five lakh people are dying of cancer, every year in India. 10-15% have cancer due to unhygineic conditions and obesity.

Tobacco consumption in civic schools is 30% within the age-group of 10-18 years."We have shared with the corporators all details of information that can be shared with the ward related to ill-effects of tobacco, as well as the laws that need to be implemented. Especially, on spitting and public smoking. We will create awareness on sale of tobacco within 100 yards of any educational institute,"said Dr Rajendra Badwe, Tata Memorial hospital.

The Preventive Oncology department of Tata Memorial hospital will provide information to BMC on the ill-effects of tobacco and it various laws.A demand was made in the civic general body meeting to set up a tobacco control cell in BMC.

GHMC offers to check overflowing sewage

The GHMC Commissioner, M.T. Krishna Babu, has offered to pick up the cost of improving the sewer lines in case of a major work to prevent perennial overflow of sewage on the roads in various parts of the twin cities.

Continuing his daily inspection tours on the road stretches identified for developed for the Conference of Parties (COP) international bio-diversity summit on Wednesday, Mr. Krishna Babu once again noticed overflowing sewage on the roads at Erramanzil, S.R. Nagar, Ravindra and several other places.

Even while directing his engineers to keep the Water Board informed about the leaks, he said that if the work necessitated a bigger intervention, the municipal corporation would provide funds.

Irked with engineers

An underground stormwater drain should be taken up on Erramanzil-Punjagutta road, he said. The Commissioner was irked with the engineers over the poor maintenance of footpaths, road repairs and water stagnations. He was informed that work for laying 4.4 km footpath on both sides of the roads from S.R. Nagar to Punjagutta has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs.98 lakh.

Later, the Commissioner also visited Begum Bazar, Afzal Gunj, Charminar, Lad Bazar, Hussaini Alam, Karwan, Langar House, Golkonda, Shaikpet, Tolichowki, Mehidipatnam etc., a release said.

BANGALORE: Here is some good news for those alarmed over a possible dengue outbreak due to piling garbage mounds in the city.The BBMP on Tuesday resolved to sweep the city clean twice every day.

The additional cleaning will be taken up in the evenings.Dengue dominated discussions at the BBMP council and a resolution was adopted according to which additional machines, trucks and garbage carrying containers will be procured for the scaled-up cleaning operations.Corporators expressed concern over garbage litters all over the city.

BMP commissioner MK Shankarlinge Gowda, however, said that it was impossible to make the city garbage free. "No city is garbage free. Garbage cannot be wished away. We only have to find out ways to deal with it," he said."Dengue is not new.

There have been only seven deaths in Karnataka so far due to dengue. It's a seasonal disease and occurs every year. I admit that the BBMP has delayed conducting awareness programmes, but we have now started the door-to-door inspection drive People must not store fresh water in open containers," said the commissioner.From now on, every positive dengue patient will be provided financial support for platelet donation treatment, he added.The session witnessed several dramatic moments.

KL Thimmananjaiah, corporator from Peenya Industrial Area, clad in black displayed a banner against BBMP's failure in tackling dengue.D J Halli corporator R Sampath Raj alleged that dengue originated in Thimmananjaiah's ward.
