Anti-rabies injections will be available at DMCH, CMCH now

Express News Service Tags : Ludhiana Municipal Corporation, Christian Medical College Posted: Fri Dec 10 2010, 05:16 hrs

Ludhiana:  With the civil hospital not storing anti-rabies vaccine, due to which dog-bite patients go without treatment, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has tied up with the Christian Medical College (CMCH) and Hospital and Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). It has been decided that area councillors will authorise patients on their letterpad and these hospitals will do the vaccination free of cost. The MC will reimburse the hospitals at the end of the month.

The decision was taken in a meeting held here on Thursday. Senior Deputy Mayor Parveen Bansal said: “At least three people died in the city in the last few months for want of anti-rabies vaccine. Though private hospitals have this vaccine, they charge Rs 1,500 per patient. Poor families cannot afford this treatment because the civil hospital, where they usually go for treatment, does not having this vaccine. Hence, we decided to have this tie-up.”

Mayor Hakam Singh Giaspura, Finance and Contract Committee member Pal Singh Grewal and many others were present in the meeting. The MC has also started a sterilisation and vaccination programme of dogs. But not all street dogs have been vaccinated yet and hence chances of dog-bite cases catching rabies are high.

Civic hospitals to get 140 beds in 9 private health facilities

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will tag nine private hospitals as auxiliary health units to major civic hospitals. The idea is to keep a check on whether these hospitals, developed by the BMC under public private partnership (PPP), are adhering to the terms of their agreement to reserve some beds for the poor.

The BMC, according to the agreement signed with these nine hospitals, was to get 140 beds under their mandatory quota. These hospitals have been built on BMC land.

These beds were to be used for referral patients from BMC hospitals or be given to patients below the poverty line.

Additional municipal commissioner, Manisha Mhaiskar, said the BMC was getting the benefits of these 140 beds but that was at a local level.

The BMC will now integrate these beds in its health system.

Mhaiskar said the move will bring relief during the monsoons, when civic hospitals are brimming and patients are forced to sleep on the floor. “We are going to put up public advertisements saying these 140 beds are BMC’s share and an eligible person can demand a bed in any of these nine hospitals,” Mhaiskar said.

The additional bed facility will be introduced from January.

The list of nine hospitals, which provide benefits under the PPP agreement, includes maternity centres and cardiac hospitals.

A co-branding board will be put up at the hospitals’ gates specifying the number of beds set aside for poor patients under the BMC’s quota.

Focus on cleanliness: Minister

Staff Reporter

Guntur: Minister for Housing Kanna Lakshminarayana has ordered the officials of Guntur Municipal Corporation and municipalities to focus on cleanliness in habitations in view of the heavy rain lashing the district for the last 48 hours.

Addressing a review meeting with officials of the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) and municipalities at the R&B guest house here on Wednesday, Mr. Lakshminarayana instructed the civic officials to urgently take up road and canal works in Guntur west constituency and to drain off stagnant water in the low-lying areas.

Due emphasis ought to be laid on garbage disposal to prevent spread of seasonal diseases. The situation in Konda Venkatappayya Colony was pathetic and similar conditions prevailed elsewhere, necessitating remedial action at the earliest.

Mr. Lakshminarayana said that houses would be built for eligible poor under the Rajiv Awas Yojna.

Steps would be taken to expedite the construction of houses under the Indiramma scheme. Banks should extend bridge loans as per guidelines, he added.

Later, the Minister distributed Rs. 30,000 each in the form of cheques to 12 beneficiaries of the Rajiv Gruhakalpa scheme.

Microfinance

On Microfinance Institutions (MFI), Mr. Lakshminarayana said there were 2.38 lakh persons who borrowed from MFI in the district and 76,000 in GMC limits.

Twenty complaints were received on alleged harassment by MFI and punitive action was being taken.
