Meat market: MC may lease out booths

CHANDIGARH: After failing to find any takers for the auction of Sector 41-based new meat and fish market, now the municipal corporation has decided to discuss the matter in the upcoming finance and contract committee ( F&CC) meeting scheduled later this month. Though sources revealed that officials and public representatives have reached a mutual understanding that shops should be given on rent at reasonable rates, instead of selling them on high prices.

Sources in the civic body stated that few days ago both officials and public representatives had held a meeting to discuss the issue and all agreed to give the shops on lease, instead of conducting auctions.

Requesting anonymity, a senior MC official said, "We are going to discuss the matter in the upcoming finance and contract committee meeting and everyone is convinced that shops should be given on rent instead of being sold off. We are hopeful that we will be able to find some solution."

Initially, MC had conducted auction of the Sector-41 fish and meat market in the month of April. However, the auction became a damp squib as none of the customers came forward to buy the booths due to its high prices. A recent bid also failed miserably as only one bidder came forward to buy the booths.

The matter was taken up in the recent monthly House meeting of municipal corporation, in which councillors had also settled to give the shops on rent.

There are 33 booths in the air-conditioned fish and meat market. During the April auction, the reserve price of booths was fixed at Rs 41.50 lakh for booths measuring 25.375 square yards. The reserve price of booths having an area of 22.75 square yards was Rs 37.50 lakh, while those with 47.25 square yards area were priced at Rs 77.50 lakh.

MC had constructed the AC fish and booth market with the aim of providing fresh and hygienic meat to city residents.

5 booked for dumping garbage in city

GURGAON: A day after Gurgaon's municipal commissioner sternly warned commercial establishments and residents not to dump garbage in the open, he finally cracked the whip.

On Monday, an official of MGF mall and an official of the Vatika building in sector 29 were booked by the police under section 188 of the IPC for dumping garbage in the open. Apart from the two officials, three other persons including the landowner on whose plot the garbage was dumped were also booked by the cops. Police have confiscated the two tractor trolleys in which the trash was being transported.

"We booked the landowner Jai Bhagwan, a resident of Nathupur village, and two of his workers, Basad Ali and Milan, both of who are from West Bengal, for transporting and dumping the garbage on the plot that belongs to Jai Bhagwan. We have also identified the people responsible for generating the garbage in the first place and have booked them under the same section," said a police official.

MCG officials said they have intensified their drive against people who dump garbage in the city. We have a modern solid waste treatment plant near Bandhwari where all the garbage from the city, including the HUDA sectors, is transported everyday. But private developers, who charge residents to collect their garbage, simply dump it wherever they want. They will be taken to task from now on," said an official.

Shortage of glucometer strips hits BBMP’s health camps

The screening camps for hypertension and diabetes in slums organised by the Health department and Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) are plagued with acute shortage of glucometer strips.

While the Health department has 36,000 glucometer strips in stock, it requires three lakh strips more.

An official from the department said that things were under control and that the Union Health Ministry had been apprised of the situation. "Since the camp was a sudden decision, the Centre sent the glucometer strips and the machine in a hurry. We have requested for more strips from the director of Health Ministry, who has promised to send them," the official said. The organisers are expecting to screen over two lakh people above 30 years at the camps. The department has received 144 glucometers so far.

Prelude to Health Mission

Funded by the Union Health Ministry, the camps are set to be launched in five other cities - Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

The camp intends to study the prevalence of non-communicable diseases in urban slums to chalk out National Urban Health Mission (NUHM), which will be the urban counterpart of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).

Apart from hypertension and diabetes, people will also be counselled on the ill-effects of tobacco and alcohol addiction at the camp.

The camp, which was inaugurated at JP Nagar II Phase on October 2, will be held in 327 slums notified by the BBMP, from October 6. The slums have been divided among the eight medical colleges, which will be providing doctors and paramedical staff for the camp.  The camp will be conducted five days a week, for two months and each team will get three glucometers.

"There are over nine lakh people in these slums of which over four lakh are above 30 years. We are expecting 50 percent of this group to attend the camps," an official said. Each medical college will be provided with two data operators to gather data of patients everyday.

To encourage more participation, the link workers associated with BBMP hospitals will go door-to-door to sensitise people about the camp and they would be provided Rs 100 per day. Persons detected with high blood pressure or diabetes will be referred to four government hospitals, besides Nimhans and Kidwai Institute of Oncology. "The entire cost of drugs will be borne by the department. The link worker will also ensure the patient continues the treatment," the official explained.
