Children's park near MCD dumping site

NEW DELHI: Construction debris, at least a part of it, is being dumped right in the middle of south Delhi's GK-I. The civic agency finds nothing wrong in dumping the debris near residential colonies. "The dumping sites were identified as per demand and are located away from residential areas where there is no heavy vehicular traffic. In the case of R-block too these criteria were kept in mind. The dumping sites in colonies are usually supposed to be used for malba generated in and around the colony area. But it becomes very hard to identify if anyone else is also making use of the site or not," said MCD's press and information director, Deep Mathur.

According to residents, there is a park located right next to the site which is frequented by children and senior citizens. The malba has not only resulted in traffic jams but the loose earth — which is also dumped there — turns to sludge when it rains. "The malba site raises a stink and leads to major traffic jams. Around five trucks come in the wee hours of the morning and dump malba at the site. Since the trucks usually come at odd hours, we can't even prevent them from unloading the mess at the site — which is supposed to be Delhi Police land. The mounds of malba have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes which is leading to sickness in the nearby areas. The loose earth is not even being levelled and turns to sludge every time it rains," said secretary RWA, GK Enclave-I, Sanjay Sood.

Said Padam Malik, chairperson, security, of GK Enclave-I: "The malba causes major traffic jams especially during peak hours. Earlier, the malba was being dumped in the lane next to the site which is used by residents of our colony. We made several complaints to MCD before they removed the malba from there."

Sanitation is the need of the hour

BANGALORE: The residents of A Narayanapura ward are facing lot of problems due to unhygienic conditions. The overgrown weeds at a few vacant sites are a cause of concern.

The residents demand the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities to take measures to keep the areas clean. They want the BBMP authorities to ensure the pourakarmikas and the garbage contractor to work hard to clear the garbage on daily basis.

“I have not seen pourakarmikas clearing the garbage on regular basis. It has become a difficult for us to dispose the garbage,’’ said Manikanta, a resident.

As like many areas, Narayanapura is not immune to water shortage. There is no dearth for borewells but the yield of water is below than the benchmark. With the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) failed to supply the drinking water, the residents have to depend on private water suppliers. “Our corporator has taken some measures to supply water through tankers but it is not sufficient for us. We expect him to pressurise the BWSSB authorities to supply water to us,’’ said a housewife on condition of anonymity.

The worst affected area, due to lack of sanitation, is Jyothipura. It is a slum area where the under-ground facility was not provided even after 30 years of its existence. “I was born and brought up here. We have been demanding for the UGD facility for many years but in vain,’’ said  S Vijaya, a resident of Jyothipura.

The open drains at Udayanagar and Pai Layout are clogged with silt and debris. The overgrown weeds at a few vacant sites have become a breeding place for insects.

Meanwhile, S S Prasad, Corporator, said that efforts were being made to construct a multi-storey residential complex for slum-dwellers at Jyothipura. “I accompanied the Slum Clearance Board officials to Jyothipura for an inspection. If everything goes as per plan, the construction work will begin shortly,’’ said Prasad.

He said that the cleaning of garbage was not up to the mark. “I am expecting the BBMP to float tenders for ward-wise garbage cleaning. I think the garbage problems to be solved as soon as new contractor is appointed,’’ said Prasad.

On the acute shortage of drinking water, the corporator said that he had already requested the BWSSB authorities to provide water supply to the residents of A Narayanapura and other areas.

Waterlogging exposes poor civic sanitation

PNS | Dehradun

The failure of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun to facilitate civic sanitation has continued to exacerbate the waterlogging problem in the city.

With the rainfall expected to break the record of the past 36 years, many roads and residential areas are facing the problem of waterlogging because the dumped garbage has blocked the existing storm water drainage outlets across the town.

Since the advent of the rainy season, the MCD has been struggling to cope up with the problem resulting from the lack of civic sanitation and waterlogging.

Dehradun Mayor Vinod Chamoli has so far presided over many rounds of meetings with the officials of the MCD’s Land and Health divisions and issued instructions aimed at facilitating the desired level of sanitation in the town.

Apart from this, even the district administration has issued directions to officials of the MCD and the Health Department to ensure that the required level of civic sanitation be maintained in the city. However, both the MCD and the district administration have been unable to ensure the desired level of civic sanitation in Dehradun.

Recently, two vehicle users sustained severe injuries when they lost their balance while trying to traverse a road flooded by storm water because the drainage outlets existing under the road were clogged by garbage dumped there in violation of civic sanitation regulations.

Soon after the advent of monsoon in Dehradun, residents of many areas had faced the problem of waterlogging caused by storm water and drains clogged by the carelessly dumped garbage.

The Mayor himself had toured the localities hit by waterlogging along with MCD officials, following which he had directed the officials to ensure clearance of the drainage system to prevent the problems caused by waterlogging in the areas. However, due to different factors negatively affecting both the MCD and the district administration, the required level of civic sanitation has not been achieved in the city. As a result of this, the problem caused by waterlogging has been exacerbated in many commercial and residential areas of the city.
