Pune:  A cooperative for door-to-door collection of garbage has launched a signature campaign opposing the Pune Municipal Corporation’s move to bring in more agencies for the purpose. The members of Swach have managed to secure the support of a number of residents who believe that the cooperative was doing a commendable job.

“We have got signatures of 30,000 citizens opposing the move of roping in a new organisation for door-to-door collection when Swach was doing a good job,” said Shabana Diler of Swach. She said they have registered their protest with the civic body and submitted a memorandum signed by citizens.”

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Suresh Jagtap admitted that Swach is doing a good job.”We don’t intend to affect the operation of Swach. However, a large number of households are yet to be covered and the option of more organisations is being explored,” he said. The PMC through Swach covers 2.5 lakh houses of 7.5 lakh in its jurisdiction, charging Rs 10 per month.

Meanwhile, a few elected representatives have also expressed their displeasure over the functioning of Swach and have proposed the introduction of independent groups in their respective wards. Sena corporator Sachin Bhagat is providing the service free of cost in his ward. “I have roped in unemployed poor youths who make money from the scrap collected,” he said. Former mayor and NCP corporator Rajlaxmi Bhosale too has decided to rope in her own agency in her ward.

New delhi:  To provide better healthcare in its hospitals, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) recently signed an MoU with the Quality Council of India (QCI) to upgrade its hospitals to meet standards listed by the QCI. Under the MoU, the QCI will oversee the upgrade work in which the NDMC will procure equipment and improve the infrastructure of its healthcare centres.

The facilities covered under the agreement are Charak Palika Hospital in Moti Bagh, Palika Maternity Hospital in Lodhi Colony, 20-Allopathic dispensaries and 23-AYUSH dispensaries located in different zones of the NDMC. The time limit for completion of the project is 9 months after which the healthcare centres will be accredited under the National Accreditation Board for Hospital & Healthcare Providers (NABH). They will get a certificate to confirm that the hospitals match all standards of providing good healthcare.

“At present, some of the hospitals and centres are in bad shape. There is a lack of staff and some of the buildings are also crumbling. With the accreditation, the hospitals will get X-ray machines and improve their laboratories,” said an official of QCI.

At the occasion Gyani said, “There is growing awareness among the public and media about healthcare and so there is a need for quality healthcare services from government hospitals.”

BMC nullah helpline

Mumbai:  Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday suggested that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) provide a helpline number for all complaints regarding nullah cleaning and desilting work — a crucial pre-monsoon activity in flood prone areas. He also suggested that the details of contractors, civic officials and corporators of areas responsible for nullah work be made public.

Thackeray made these suggestion during a visit to various sites to check desilting work. He was accompanied by Mayor Shraddha Jadhav, standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale and other BMC officials.

“The BMC should provide helpline numbers for citizens to lodge complaint in case of any work not being completed or if they face any problems when the work is being done,” Thackeray said.

“In addition to this, the names and addresses of contractors, deputy municipal commissioners, ward officers, corporators of all areas responsible for the nullah work should be made public,” he said, adding that the numbers could be put on display boards.

The residents of the respective areas would be able to contact officials or contractors or other people responsible for incomplete or improper nullah cleaning work directly, Thackeray said.

At some sites, the nullah cleaning work had been completed, while in others it was incomplete. Like in Dahisar area, nullah cleaning work in one nullah was still incomplete and the silt had just been dumped on its edges. “I had visited this nullah last year and it was the same status,” Thackeray said, even as officials assured him that the cleaning work will be done before May 31. “There are a few spots where the work is not satisfactory, so we will visit all those spots once again on June 6,” he announced.

During the visit, the officials also visited the Irla pumping station which is likely to start functioning within two weeks.
