Mumbai:  A partial collapse in stone-lined drainage chamber led to the cave-in

A day after the portion of a road caved in at the busy Nagpada junction, civic officials said the stretch had been repaired and traffic restored to normal.

“The road cave-in has been repaired and it will be in proper condition by Monday morning,” said Prakash Patil, assistant municipal commissioner of E Ward.

The stone-lined drainage chamber that saw a partial collapse causing the road cave in on Saturday afternoon has not been repaired in a long time, officials said. The is the latest in a series of similar incidents in the city.

Last Thursday, a small section of a footpath along ‘A’ Road off Marine Drive, where a building is under construction, also caved in.

Residents of the area had complained that due to the cave in, the compound wall of adjoining buildings had been damaged. Also, due to the cave-in, the utility lines, such as the gas pipelines had broken down and the MTNL network was affeced. The Nagpada residents have not complained of any utility pipeline damage following the road cave in, said Patil.

Last year, a portion of the arterial Pedder Road collapsed due to the collapse of a sewer line below it. Earlier, a portion of the busy road near Jacob Circle had caved in similarly.
