Corporation allots Rs 12 crore for road works

KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation has allocated Rs 12 crore for repairing the potholed city roads out of the total outlay of Rs 57 crore set aside for various projects in the city under its administration.

With polls to the civic bodies approaching fast and Kochiites upset over the dilapidated roads in the city, the local body seems to be serious this time around to make the roads fit for safe travel.

Improvement and repair of roads feature in the top priority list in the Draft Plan of the Kochi Corporation's People's Plan campaign for the year 2010-11.

According to the plan approved by the development seminar organised by the city Corporation the other day, an amount of Rs 12 crore has been set aside for repair and renovation of the Corporation roads.

The allocation for road repairs under the Central zone is Rs 2.53 crore while it is Rs 83.5 lakh for Pachalam zone. An amount of Rs 2.91 crore will be set apart for the Vyttila zone and Rs 1.69 crore for the Fort Kochi zone. The allocation for Edappally and Palluruthy zones are Rs 2.03 crore and 1.72 crore respectively.

The seminar has approved a total outlay of Rs 57 crore for projects in all sectors.

A total of Rs 27.5 crore has been set apart for the projects under general category while Rs 12.59 crore has been allotted for component projects.

A sum of Rs 2.82 crore has been allocated for projects related to solid waste disposal and health and nutrition while Rs 3.26 crore has been set apart for projects to prevent waterlog in the city. The Corporation plans to set up a commercial centre at Edappally for sales and marketing of the products manufactured by various Kudumbashree units. Maintenance and renovation of various parks in the city, issuance of identity cards to Anganavadi employees and construction of a working women's hostel at the 17th division of the Corporation are also included in the plan.

Separate funds have been allotted for projects to plant saplings and conserving the existing trees in the city.
