Chandigarh:  Residents of Sector 8 have virtually been trapped in their houses for the last few days. Due to the road widening work being undertaken by the Municipal Corporation, the area in front of their houses has been dug up, making it difficult for any vehicle to enter and exit.

The civic body began road widening work and recarpeting of in Sector 8 more than a month ago. The road in Sector 8 A was dug up three days ago. The gardens that the residents had set up on the municipal land as well as the driveways that had been extended, have also been torn down to facilitate the work. In the process, deep pits were dug up in front of the residences.

A resident of the area, Rashi, said despite repeated requests to workers in the area, no steps were taken to solve the problem. “Pits were dug up three days ago. Our cars and those of our neighbours got stuck in these pits. We had to seek help of half-a-dozen people to get these out. Everyday, the contractor tells us that some arrangement would be made. But nothing has been done so far,” she said.

Another resident said the whole stretch of the road has been dug up and the contractor seems to have vanished. Area councillor Chander Mukhi Sharma said the officials have been requested a number of times to complete the work at the earliest.
