GHMC to undertake road repairs

Special Correspondent

Works will be taken up within a week's time

Short tenders to be called; Rs. 6 crore released

R&B also to take up road restoration works

HYDERABAD: For citizens weary and fearful of the battered roads in the twin cities, there is some good news. GHMC is all set to take up repairs of all the stretches that have been badly damaged during the current monsoon in all areas under its jurisdiction within a week's time.

Commissioner Sameer Sharma directed the engineering wing at the head office to call for short tenders to do the repairs and also released Rs. 6 crore for the same.

Chief Engineer Dhan Singh said repairs would be done even in the roads owned by other departments like the Roads & Buildings Department.

“Despite continuous rains in the last few days we have decided to repair the roads at the extensively damaged sections to minimise inconvenience to citizens and also because of the festive season of Ramzan and forthcoming Ganesh Chaturthi,” said Mr. Singh.

Areas identified

A quick assessment of the damaged roads has been made in the last few days to prepare the tender documents. Repairs are to be done on roads located in areas as varied as Malakpet, Amberpet, Kacheguda, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Secunderabad, Kukatpally and others.

However, the CE was quick to point out that total metal carpeting of the roads can be taken up extensively only after the rains abate in the next couple of months.

Rs. 2 crore spent

In the last few days, close to Rs. 2 crore was spent to fill up potholes and some of the damaged road sections in the some parts by the respective zonal offices, officials say.

More heartening is the R&B too is said to be preparing for some road repairs as they ‘own' some of the main thoroughfares in the capital.
