‘Flyover plan fine, but look at other options too’

Lauding the state road development agency’s plan to build the Peddar Road flyover, Bombay First, a citizens’ group, also advised the agency to look at other options and ensure there would be minimal traffic problems. “It [the flyover] is an option which should be explored but we also need to look at the kind of traffic bottleneck it will create when construction begins. There is a need to ensure a system is in place to handle these issues,” said Narendra Nayar, chairman, Bombay First.

On Tuesday, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation joint vice-chairperson and managing director Sonia Sethi made a presentation of all their work to members of the Bombay First, including Noel Tata, the additional director of Tata Group’s retail venture Trent.

The citizens’ group also evaluated the proposal to build sea links across the coast. “What is needed is a comprehensive plant to link Bandra to Nariman Point. What is happening right now is a piecemeal approach,” Nayar said.

Appreciating MSRDC’s efforts at implementing the Passenger Water Transport System’s West Coast Project, which will link Borivli and Nariman Point via hovercrafts and catamarans, the members suggested that efforts should be made to ensure that travel would be open all 365 days, instead of around 250 days of fair weather.

“The MSRDC should ensure that the project is completed in a time-bound manner,” Nayar said.
