MCD says can’t mend roads before games

The bumpy rides, it seems, will continue even during the Commonwealth Games. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has found one more excuse of rains to not repair the pothole-ridden roads. The civic agency claimed that the incessant rains has damaged 106 km of roads in the city and that those could only be mended in dry weather.

According to the civic agency, there are 307 roads that need repair. It has also identified 450 points that are full of potholes and need immediate attention.

But, with their deadline of September 30 to finish the work looming close, officials said if the rains continue, they would not be able to do it before the Games.

The civic agency has even earmarked R66 lakh to carry out the repair work.

“We have asked the zones to start the work immediately, as a lot of roads have been damaged due to the rains. It has rained approximately 1,038 mm this season, which is quite a lot. But we can start work only when it stops raining,” said K.S. Mehra, MCD Commissioner.

On Thursday, the issue was even discussed during MCD’s House meeting.
