Re-development work on Ring Road begins

SURAT: The re-development work for the much awaited 6.6 km Ring Road has kicked off in the city. The re-development of the Ring Road will take place in phases at an estimated cost of Rs 20 crore.Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has thus closed the RTO circle on an experimental basis for one week to ease traffic congestion in one of the busiest areas.

The closure could be permanent if the experiment is successful.Dividers will be placed on the RTO traffic circle. This will enable the vehicles coming from that side or from women's swimming pool side to merge with vehicles coming from Majuragate. On the other side of the road, SMC will open up a 10-metre road under the flyover near Majuragate for the vehicles coming from Nanpura and Timlaiya Wad to go to Athwagate. For vehicles coming from flyover and wanting to go to Nanpura-Timaliya Wad, a divider below the Athwagate flyover will be removed.

"The traffic density is of 5,000 vehicles per hour. This arrangement will help in reducing the congestion," an SMC official said.
