GO soon on transfer of R and B roads to GHMC

The state Government will soon issue an order for handing over R&B roads in the city to GHMC and creating a separate division for it, municipal commissioner Somesh Kumar has said.

The move is to protect the GHMC from public blame though most of the roads are being poorly maintained by the R&B department. He asked officials to prepare plans to develop a road length while addressing sanitation, debris removal, construction of table drains, camber correction, footpaths, patch works, greenery, etc.

He called for proposals for development of 40 km roads in each circle in 10 days. He said GHMC plans to make specific changes in road maintenance policy by calling tenders for contract of annual maintenance of roads after completion of defect liability period of the contractor. Such a system is existing in New Delhi and yielding good results.

The commissioner asked zonal commissioners to hold a review meeting with superintending engineers once in a week, personally monitor the works, fix up the responsibility and complete the works in a stipulated time. The commissioner will be reviewing with the zonal commissioners and SEs twice in a month.

He observed that most of the roads were not laid to the proper level where sweeping machines are unable to cover because of the uneven levels. Engineering officials must come up with plans to level the roads, he said.
