The land for the proposed road has been reserved in the DP of the NMC that was passed in 1993. The NMC has finally decided to speed up the land acquisition after a gap of almost 20 years. Mangalore City Corporation moots road map to root out traffic snarls in city

MANGALORE: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has taken several measures to ease traffic congestions on Mangalore roads.

The corporation has set aside Rs 1 crore to install traffic signals, CCTV cameras and other amenities. Traffic signals at circles near Bunts Hostel, Hampankatta, PVS, Lady Hill, KSRTC, Kankanady, Nanthoor and Pumpwell will be synchronised to ensure smooth flow of vehicles. New signal lamps will be installed at Bunts Hostel, PVS, Lalbagh, Ambedkar and Karavali Circle at an estimated cost of Rs 39.78 lakh soon.

MCC is also planning to submit a proposal to the state government to construct a permanent bus stand near Pumpwell Circle and other facilities, said MCC superintending engineer BS Balakrishna.

A comprehensive plan will be prepared to improve the coastal city's traffic system after discussing the matter with district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai, minister for health and family welfare UT Khader and Mangalore City South MLA JR Lobo. "A final decision on constructing a bus stand near Mahavir (Pumpwell) Circle will be taken at the meeting of the elected representatives. A comprehensive traffic management plan will be chalked in the meeting," Balakrishna said.

Sundaram Consultants, a Bangalore based agency, has already conducted a preliminary survey on the city's traffic management. The main focus of the study was to find out the actual flow of traffic in Mangalore. "Since the proposed bus stand will be located near the National Highway additional preparations will have to be made to ease the traffic congestion. After studying all aspects, a new roadmap will be prepared and expression of interest to prepare a project report for the proposed new bus stand and other developmental works will be invited soon after the meeting of the people's representatives," he added.
