PMC admits delay in road improvement work

PUNE: Following the accident on Thursday that killed a 17-year-old at Chandni Chowk, the Pune municipal corporation has now announced that it would carry out tarring of the road here. City municipal commissioner Mahesh Pathak said the administration would complete the work in 15 days.

Pathak also said that the road improvement work at Chandni chowk has been delayed and a decision on action to be taken against the official concerned in this area will be taken after getting a report from traffic police department.

Pathak was speaking at the civic general body meeting when the elected members, agitated over the accident on Thursday morning, raised the question of the delay in road repair works at Chandni chowk. "A college student lost his life in the accident. It is the fault of the civic administration that has led to the delay in solving traffic problems at Chandni chowk area. What action has the civic administration planned against officials who have not acted swiftly to solve the traffic issues," asked Yogesh Mokate, a Shiv Sena corporator.

Prithviraj Sutar, other Shiv Sena corporator held the civic administration responsible for "aggravating the traffic problem by handling the land acquisition issue wrongly."

The elected members cutting across party lines had held an agitation at Chandni chowk earlier this month and in January to draw attention to the accident prone area. They had submitted a memorandum to the civic administration seeking a solution to the problem.

"There has been a delay in finding an answer to this problem. The traffic issue in this area is very complicated. Three roads including the Pune-Mumbai highway converge on this spot and has heavy traffic. The civic administration has been taking efforts to solve the problem. The civic administration has planned long term as well as short term solutions to remove the congestion," said Pathak.

Pathak said that one road at this chowk has a slope, while another road is a highway. There are problems in acquiring land along the roads and people who own the land are reluctant to give it to the civic body for widening the road. This has delayed the road widening, he added.

He said that the civic administration has planned steps including a small bridge for connecting the roads, widening of the road, tarring and shifting of bus stop, autorickshaw stands and removal of roadside encroachments to ensure smooth movement of traffic.

Re-development work on Ring Road begins

SURAT: The re-development work for the much awaited 6.6 km Ring Road has kicked off in the city. The re-development of the Ring Road will take place in phases at an estimated cost of Rs 20 crore.Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has thus closed the RTO circle on an experimental basis for one week to ease traffic congestion in one of the busiest areas.

The closure could be permanent if the experiment is successful.Dividers will be placed on the RTO traffic circle. This will enable the vehicles coming from that side or from women's swimming pool side to merge with vehicles coming from Majuragate. On the other side of the road, SMC will open up a 10-metre road under the flyover near Majuragate for the vehicles coming from Nanpura and Timlaiya Wad to go to Athwagate. For vehicles coming from flyover and wanting to go to Nanpura-Timaliya Wad, a divider below the Athwagate flyover will be removed.

"The traffic density is of 5,000 vehicles per hour. This arrangement will help in reducing the congestion," an SMC official said.

Considering the heavy traffic congestion that Vyttila will witness once the entire transport activities of the City get shifted to the Mobilty Hub, the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has decided to speed up the work for widening the Chilavannoor Bund Road.

As per the GCDA’s plan, the road that stretches parallel to Sahodaran Ayyappan Road will be widened to 15 metres.

Opening an easy access to Thevara, the road will begin near Thykkoodam bridge at NH Bypass near Vyttila junction. It will pass through Chilavannoor and Panampilly Nagar and end at Pandit Karuppan Road.

The width of the road on the stretch may be restricted to 8 metre in some areas owing to the huge amount of money needed for land acquisition. It is learnt that the GCDA authorities had already reached a consensus with some of the land owners on acquisition of land and rehabilitation.

The rehabilitation process will not be a major hurdle for the GCDA as it owns a considerable volume of land. However, it needs the government sanction for acquiring land.

The GCDA is expected to start the acquisition process once the project gets the administrative nod. However, experts are of the opinion that a detailed study should be conducted for the development of Vyttila Junction.

Apart from the elevated highway proposed on the Kundannoor-Edappally stretch, they point out the need for a cloverleaf or flyover. “If both are not possible at the junction owing to space limitations, then an underpass should be constructed at Vyttila. The underpass can have one wider outer circular pedestrian path and one inner circular way. The two circular paths should be connected with the entrance of all shops. When a person enters the subway through one entrance using steps or escalator, he can go to all other roads and also to the bus terminal,” they say.

Earlier, the Kochi Corporation too had mooted a project for the development of four major junctions in the city, including Vyttila and Palarivattam. However, that project failed to have takeoff.
