Now, civic body launches road works in the interest of tourists

MYSORE: After launching the groundwork for the widening of some important stretches in the city to ease traffic, the civic authorities on Friday focussed on visitors' needs.Arterial road that connects Mysore railway station to the foothills of Chamundi Hills will now be upgraded. District minister S A Ramdas launched the works for the development of the stretch between the Ooty Road junction and the foothills via Suttur Mutt. Though the small stretch of 550 metre between Ooty Road junction and the foothills was proposed to be upgraded to 7 metre, it will now be developed with a central median and drain running along its sides.

This follows the plan of Mysore Urban Development Authority (Muda) plan to widen JLB Road from Ramaswamy junction to Ooty Road junction to facilitate the tourists to access the pilgrimage site. The 4km stretch is a crucial stretch connecting the city centre to the pilgrim site, and Rs 3 crore has been budgeted by the urban body this fiscal for the works. JLB Road stretch between Ramaswamy junction and Babu Jagjivan Ram junction abutting railway station was upgraded some 14 years ago to facilitate tourists heading towards KRS dam.

Once completed, the entire stretch -- from the railway station to the foothills -- will have a road of 15 metre width.According to the minister, the Muda-funded project will be launched by month-end. "Given the plans by the urban body, we've remodelled the road development project linking the Ooty Road to the foothills," the minster said. Initially, Rs 25 lakh was sanctioned for the project, which is now being doubled and the width of the stretch will be 7.5 metre. This comes after work to widen some of the important but crowded stretches in the city that take heavy load linking the city centre to residential areas was launched. Adichunchanagiri Road in Kuvempunagar, Mahadeshwara Road in Nazarbad, Rajkumar Road and Aravind Nagar Main Road are being upgraded at a cost of Rs 11.18 crore.

Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon to spend Rs 80 lakh on road repair work

GURGAON: Eight months after spending around Rs 10 lakh to repair a stretch near Khandsa Road, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has again prepared an estimate of Rs 80 lakh to re-lay the same road. This was after the road developed cracks at various places, highlighting the inferior material used by the MCG for construction purposes, in the first place.

According to sources, in December last year, the chief engineer had ordered a patch work on this stretch that connects Sohna Chowk to Khandsa Road through Shivaji Nagar and over Rs 10 lakh was spent by the engineering department to carry out the job.

However, soon afterwards, the residents started complaining that that the road has again started developing cracks in many places and needs urgent repair.

"Clearly, the municipal corporation did a very shoddy job and that is the reason why the road has started cracking so soon. Traffic movement has also slowed down because of the bad condition of the road and despite repeated complaints, the authorities have not bothered to do anything about it," said Suraj Pal Singh, a Shivaji Nagar resident.

MCG officials, however, say that the condition of the road has deteriorated because of the absence of stormwater drain. "It is not true that we have used substandard material to construct this road. The reason why it has started developing cracks is waterlogging. Therefore, before spending the Rs 80 lakh on repairing this one-kilometre-long road, we are going to spend another Rs 8 lakh on laying a stormwater drain," said an engineering department official.

However, sources say that there are no stringent measures to check the quality of the material used for construction purposes.

"There is only one agency that checks the quality of the construction material and very often, the contractors manage to get the material passed by using other means. There should be more such agencies to break the monopoly and to ensure that the contractor and officials do not collude and approve inferior material," said an official.

Bhopal Municipal Corporation gets down to road patchwork

BHOPAL: The Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started patchwork of roads damaged after heavy rains earlier this month. The corporation claims to have started repair work from Thursday.

"Since the weather is good, the corporation has begun road repair work from Thursday night. There are almost 100-150 roads, which are to be maintained by the corporation. If the weather is supportive, the repair work will be completed in a week's time," BMC commissioner Rajneesh Shrivastava claimed.

"We have also asked other agencies to complete their share of work to provide residents a smooth drive," the commissioner added.

Major roads, including link road No. 2, Jyoti Talkies road, JK road and Shahpura road which were damaged due to rains are the primary target of the civic body, official said. The roads leading to 10 No. market and 11 No. bus stop which were badly damaged, would be fixed soon, they added.

Many important roads like the one connecting Chetak bridge to Jyoti talkies, Hoshangabad road, the road in the Bus Rapid Transit Systems (BRTS) were renovated only a month ago. But heavy rains severely damaged many roads.

"The roads, which were renovated a month ago by contractors are still under the warranty period for three years. As per the contract, contractor will have to maintain roads for three years," the commissioner said.
