This road won’t lead anywhere for long!

Mysore, December 5, DHNS:

Once, this road led tourists and locals to the most famous Brindavan Gardens, also known as KRS. But, that was eons ago -- or, so it feels.

It has been close to a year since the road was closed down for works to be taken up by Mysore City Corporation and Railways Department; and yet, there are hardly any signs of the road being open for vehicles.

To make matters worse, a road that runs perpendicular to this one, an important access route to CFTRI, parts of Vontikoppal and Paduvarahalli, has also been dug up in front of a petrol bunk, connecting  Hunsur road. Effectively, this means, Valmiki road as it is known, is closed to vehicles and public for indefinite period of time.
This has increased the agony of general public since the district administration seems to be indiscriminately closing the roads at two vantage points -- Valmiki Road and Mathrumandali Circle.

These roads were no doubt in a pathetic condition since long and the authorities concerned out of the blue have began repair works by erecting barricades at the entry of these roads around a couple of days ago.

The commuters who were on their way as usual were surprised to find the roads closed and had to continue their journey by travelling via Hunsur road.

But, they were in for another shock the next day when the entry to the Hunsur road too was closed and were forced to travel further and turn right opposite CIIL to reach their destinations.

The district administration has not even thought about erecting sign boards to inform that works are being carried out.

The road now is totally congested during the peak hours and also has many educational institutions and schools situated on the stretch like St Joseph’s, Mathru Mandali school, Mahajana’s college, Chinmaya Vidyalaya and many others.

The students are the worst hit as majority of them wait for government buses for commuting and there is heaps of rubble and dust on the road with heavy vehicles, private buses, government buses and other modes of transports racing against each other. The traffic police stationed there too are not patient enough to answer to the questions of the general public saying the works are being carried out as per the directions of the Deputy Commissioner.

The earth movers are on their jobs and the road near the petrol bunk near Hunsur road has been totally removed and not even a two-wheeler can pass through.

The people have now lost hope of the opening of KRS road, where not even a pedestrian can walk through.

Will these roads also add on to the list as it is already testing the patience of the public who curse the district administration for least bothered about the people by failing to inform them that works are in progress? ask the public.

Road-widening to cost a bomb

Road-widening to cost a bomb

Bengaluru, Dec. 5: The BBMP will have to pay out a mammoth Rs 10,000 crore if it acquires properties for widening 216 roads. Thus to avoid the financial burden, BBMP authorities are proposing Transfer of Developmental Rights (TDR).

In a bid to do away with traffic snarls, the BBMP has decided to take up a massive road-widening project in the city and has identified 216 roads for the purpose that run into a total stretch of 450 km. However, the project has stalled thanks to cases filed by a few residents.

The civic body had identified about 37,000 properties along the roads proposed for widening. These included both vacant and built up structures, said a senior BBMP official.

About 10,500 buildings will have to be razed to make space for the wider roads while the remaining properties are vacant sites and lands. A proposal for widening the Outer Ring Road to make it a signal-free corridor is also under consideration.

Under the TDR scheme, the owner of the land would get TDR in lieu of the land needed for the road widening project, the official said.

Six roads have already been widened including the Race Course Road which was completed recently. However, widening 216 roads in the city is a big challenge.

“As issuing TDR to land losers was economically viable, the BBMP has decided to take up the project through TDR. If monetary compensation is to be given, the project would cost Rs 10,000 crore and it is impossible for BBMP to mobilize that kind of money,” said the official.
