CM asks officials to repair roads

HYDERABAD: The government seems to have finally woken up to the prayers of citizens who have been suffering from traffic jams and bad roads due to heavy rains in the past two months.

In a review meeting at his residence on Sunday, Chief minister K Rosaiah directed the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and traffic police to take steps for improving the road conditions on a war-footing.

“Rains are continuing and at times there are heavy rains. Many roads and areas are getting water logged. There are traffic bottlenecks everywhere. What steps are you taking to ease the situation?”, he queried.

Rosaiah directed traffic police to ensure smooth flow of traffic by taking up junction improvements, reducing right turns, speeding up road-widening work, restrictions in parking on main roads and reducing traffic stoppages for VIP movements.

He asked GHMC officials to immediately take up road repair works and look to drain out water on roads after rains to ensure smooth flow of traffic. He instructed collectors of Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts not to compromise on drain widening. The chief minister accepted GHMC’s plea to release Rs 50 crore for repair of roads.

He also positively responded to the proposal to bring in a new law to protect lakes and nalas in the city and surrounding areas from encroachments. Officials informed him all tanks in and around the city were full and any more rains would inundate the nearby inhabited areas. Responding to the situation, Rosaiah said an empowered committee should look into the problem come out with a comprehensive plan. He directed officials to step up cleaning work to prevent spread of epidemics and seasonal diseases.

Rosaiah said that all precautions must be taken to evacuate people living on the banks of the Musi since the Himayath Sagar and Osman Sagar were full and water was being released from the reservoirs. Ministers D Nagender, M Mukesh Goud, Secunderabad MP Anjan Kumar Yadav, GHMC mayor B Karthika Reddy and other officials were present at the meeting.

MCD says can’t mend roads before games

The bumpy rides, it seems, will continue even during the Commonwealth Games. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has found one more excuse of rains to not repair the pothole-ridden roads. The civic agency claimed that the incessant rains has damaged 106 km of roads in the city and that those could only be mended in dry weather.

According to the civic agency, there are 307 roads that need repair. It has also identified 450 points that are full of potholes and need immediate attention.

But, with their deadline of September 30 to finish the work looming close, officials said if the rains continue, they would not be able to do it before the Games.

The civic agency has even earmarked R66 lakh to carry out the repair work.

“We have asked the zones to start the work immediately, as a lot of roads have been damaged due to the rains. It has rained approximately 1,038 mm this season, which is quite a lot. But we can start work only when it stops raining,” said K.S. Mehra, MCD Commissioner.

On Thursday, the issue was even discussed during MCD’s House meeting.

Mohali admn to beautify roads between Phase IV & II

Prabhmeet Luthra | Mohali

Soon the roads in Phase IV of Mohali will get a new look with trees on both sides under the city administration’s plan to beautify and widen them.

The link road between Phase IV and Phase II would be taken up on a priority basis. Due to increased vehicular traffic, the residents had been demanding for long to widen this road, and the administration has finally swung into action.

It is significant that Booth market of Phase IV is one of the busiest in Mohali city. Traffic jam outside this market is a major problem due to less parking space in proportionate to the vehicles which are around 800. The traffic is a nightmare in the evening.

According to councilor, he had proposed a slip road on entry point to GMADA nine months back. After long discussions, GMADA and District Town Planner (DTP) approved the proposal. The construction work will start after the Engineering Wing of GMADA prepare its estimate.

According to information, there will be two slip roads — one in front of Mandir and second will be adjoining with ten Marla houses. Pavers will be constructed behind seven houses to widen the road.

The implementation of the proposal will solve the problem of heavy traffic flow and parking space will also increase. Divider will be constructed on T-point near Gurudwara for handling traffic.

Besides, Ringer Street light will be installed there. All work will start in the next few days.
