Mayor directs BMC officials to repair damaged roads

Staff Reporter | Bhopal

Taking a strict view of the city roads that were left damaged during the development work, Bhopal Mayor Krishna Gaur on Thursday issued directives for the repair of these roads. She was reviewing the developmental work of Zone 5 and 6.

Notably, a number of roads in the city have not been repaired after they were left damaged by an exercise to lay water supply and sewage lines.

Taking stock of the work being carried out under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and project Uday, the Mayor directed officials to initiate the projects as soon as the formalities are completed.

Reviewing the sanitation at busy markets in the old as well as new city areas, the officials were further directed to resume the night cleanliness drives.

The Mayor also issued directives for laying of water supply pipelines at Aradhana Nagar, Panchsheel Nagar and Rahul Nagar and told officials to organise camps to register new tap connections in these areas.

She said that any development work initiated in a locality under any head should always be brought to the knowledge of the local Corporator, especially as the Corporators have, in the past, complained, that officials do not take them into confidence, before initiating the work.

BMC Commissioner Manish Singh, who also remained present on the occasion, briefed officials on revenue collection.

GHMC seeks funds for road repairs

Congress, TDP, BJP, MIM floor leaders and Mayor meet city-based Ministers

plea to extend date for regularising illegal water connections

Graveyards with all amenities, toilets in government schools sought

HYDERABAD: GHMC's elected representatives, including Mayor B. Kartika Reddy and floor leaders of all parties, met all the three city-based Ministers – Sabita Indra Reddy (Home), Mukesh Goud (B.C. Welfare) and D. Nagender (Health) — to seek generous financial assistance from the government to tone up the city infrastructure.

Floor leaders of Congress K. Venkatesam, Telugu Desam's Singireddy Srinivas Reddy, Majlis' Mirza Mustafa Baig and BJP's B. Prakash, accompanied the Mayor for a meeting in the Secretariat, sought funds to improve all the main and internal roads badly damaged in the recent rains on a war footing within the next 10 days.

All the footpaths and flyovers should be repaired and retaining walls or fencing should be built in all vulnerable populated areas of the storm water drains.

They demanded unauthorised encroachments around the storm water drains be removed and the affected persons be rehabilitated suitably.

Krishna project

With regard to the drinking water availability, they wanted Krishna water phase three to be taken up immediately as it could be done with a Rs. 800-crore budget instead of the ambitious Godavari water project that cost Rs. 3,600 crore. The floor leaders pointed out that most paper work and land acquisition work for the Krishna water project was ready to ground the project within a short span of one year. Last date for regularising illegal connections should be extended by the Hyderabad Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) and a nominal penalty of Rs. 1,000 should be collected per connection for more compliance and to generate revenues.

Graveyards should be developed by providing all the necessary amenities like water supply, toilets, greenery, lightning, compound walls, etc. The floor leaders also highlighted the need to construct toilet facilities for students of government schools in the capital as well as water filters for drinking water supply.

The Ministers gave a patient hearing to the representatives and assured them of taking the matter to Chief Minister K. Rosaiah. GHMC Commissioner Sameer Sharma, Water Board MD Jagadeeshwar, R&B Chief Engineer and other senior officials of civic departments attended the meeting.

‘Flyover plan fine, but look at other options too’

Lauding the state road development agency’s plan to build the Peddar Road flyover, Bombay First, a citizens’ group, also advised the agency to look at other options and ensure there would be minimal traffic problems. “It [the flyover] is an option which should be explored but we also need to look at the kind of traffic bottleneck it will create when construction begins. There is a need to ensure a system is in place to handle these issues,” said Narendra Nayar, chairman, Bombay First.

On Tuesday, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation joint vice-chairperson and managing director Sonia Sethi made a presentation of all their work to members of the Bombay First, including Noel Tata, the additional director of Tata Group’s retail venture Trent.

The citizens’ group also evaluated the proposal to build sea links across the coast. “What is needed is a comprehensive plant to link Bandra to Nariman Point. What is happening right now is a piecemeal approach,” Nayar said.

Appreciating MSRDC’s efforts at implementing the Passenger Water Transport System’s West Coast Project, which will link Borivli and Nariman Point via hovercrafts and catamarans, the members suggested that efforts should be made to ensure that travel would be open all 365 days, instead of around 250 days of fair weather.

“The MSRDC should ensure that the project is completed in a time-bound manner,” Nayar said.
