Special Correspondent

The 7.95 cr. project is being planned to study all existing roads conditions

Sanction will also be sought for payment of Rs.9.14 crore to SCR

HYDERABAD: The third ordinary meeting of the GHMC council on Friday will consider among other issues approving a project proposed to make an inventory of the roads under its jurisdiction to cater to future traffic demands for at least a-decade-and-a-half.

The Rs. 7.95 crore project is being planned to study all the existing roads conditions to come up with a uniform and durable network requiring minimum maintenance.

The study will help engineers to decide if roads need complete excavation, micro-carpeting or turning them into cement-concrete layers.

Tenders will be called after obtaining the government approval to choose a consultant to take up the project, said a senior official.

The meeting will also look into approving the 30 per cent share of Rs. 2.28 crore towards taking up the comprehensive transport study for the metropolitan region being taken up by HMDA.

Sanction will also be sought for payment of Rs.9.14 crore to SCR for widening the road over bridge at Lakidikapul.

Mayor’s road visit sparks trouble

BANGALORE: The Jagjivanaramnagar Main Road at the pipe line junction, which has been identified for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s road widening project, had some special visitors on Tuesday.

Mayor S K Nataraj, Deputy Mayor Dayanand and Chamarajapet MLA B Z Zameer Ahmed paid a visit to the road to study the road-widening proposal.

The road is 10 metres wide and the proposal is to widen it to 24 metres or 80ft. The road is 1.86 km long and connects Vijaynagar.

“I am for the  road widening, but I’m suggesting them to widen the road from the left side, as the right side of the road has a masjid, temple, and a church in the same line,” said Ahmed. “We do not want these structures to be demolished.”

The Palike has identified 241 properties on the left side of the road for demolition.

The left side has more government properties like the police quarters.

“One can build apartments for the police, and it will be good if the road is widened as it will reduce congestion,” said Mohammed Khalil, a resident.

The mayor said road widening was a necessity at this stretch as it would help in easy flow of traffic.

He said work on the road will start shortly.

Councillor’s husband arrives with trouble

Things turned sour at the Jagjivanaramnagar Main Road when husband of Seema Khanam, the councillor of Jagjivanaramnagar, created a ruckus on the road.

Altaf Khanam, along with some residents, came to protest against the mayor’s visit and the road widening project in the area.

Police officials had to hold back the crowd even as a bouquet of flowers was thrown where Nataraj, Dayananad and Ahmed were standing.

Police had to closed the road as the mob got out of hand.

Photographers from the media were also forced to delete pictures of the incident by the mob.

BBMP road rage scares apartment owners

G Manjusainath, Bangalore, August 2, DHNS:

The declaration made by Bangalore In-charge Minister R Ashoka and Mayor S K Nataraj about putting on hold the road widening work has not become a reality on the ground, at least for the residents of Prestige Monte Carlo at Yelahanka.

The BBMP has given jitters to the apartment owners by issuing a notice to the Prestige Monte Carlo Owners’ Association (PMCOA) informing them that a long patch of their land with a width ranging between 15-foot and 18-foot will be acquired. The Palike is dangling the carrot, Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) to persuade the PMCOA to part with their land, but the apartment owners are not impressed.

Located on a corner plot that faces the Doddaballapur main road and a road to Ananthapur village on its left, Monte Carlo is facing an imminent threat of losing all its utilities including two underground water storage tanks, underground water storage tanks for fire fighting, a sewage water treatment plant and an ancient well, which is believed to date back to some 100 years to road widening.

Amit Banerji, an office-bearer of the PMCOA says the Prestige builders left nine metres of set back as per the fire fighting norms so that fire tenders could easily run inside in the event of any untoward incident.

“The BBMP is demanding us to give them the land meant for set back. Our another worry is that the basement wall of the building will also get affected, leading to the collapse of the entire structure,” said Banerjee.

Surprisingly, the planning agency of the City, Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), could not foresee any road widening project extending up to Ananthapur and did not pressurise the builders to leave extra space. Like the residents of many other BDA-developed layouts, the apartment owners of Prestige Monte Carlo are now paying for BDA’s lack of foresight. The residents are not ready to give in easily and have decided to fight out against BBMP’s move.  “We will knock the doors of judiciary to protect our property. We will go to every possible extent to fight the case in a legitimate way,” said Venkateswaran Anand, another resident of the multi-storeyed apartment.
