Work on Lakdikapul bridge to begin soon

Aug. 1: Construction work of a parallel bridge at Lakdikapul to ease traffic congestion will start shortly as the GHMC’s Standing Committee approved the project a week back.

The civic body will pay over Rs 9 crore to the South Central Railway for taking up works on constructing a new road over-bridge abutting the existing bridge. This will pave way for extending the carriageway to four more lanes.

The plan is to merge the new and existing bridges as the existing Lakdikapul Bridge has a carriageway width of less than 30 feet.

A joint study conducted by the GHMC and the traffic police revealed that vehicle speed on this stretch has come down to 5 km per hour during peak hours.

According to the Traffic Police, over 3.5 lakh vehicles pass through the road every day. “The reason for traffic jams on this stretch is that there is only a one-lane carriageway on the Lakdikapul old bridge compared to three lanes and more at the Ravindra Bharathi side and the Ranga Reddy district collectorate side, from where a large number of vehicles hit the bridge to go towards Masab Tank and Khairatabad,” the Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic) Mr C.V. Anand said.

The GHMC officials said that nearly two dozen private properties were being acquired and around 1,500 square yards of land (on which the Intelligence Department was), has been taken over for the Lakdikapul new parallel bridge project.

The GHMC Additional Commissioner (Planning and Projects) said that though the Lakdikapul project, including construction of the bridge, acquisition of properties and payment of compensation to affected property owners, will cost over Rs 20 crore to GHMC, the civic body is not only going ahead but also speeding up works on the project as a parallel bridge is essential for smooth traffic movement on this main corridor.

Remarking on the pending proposals for construction of road over-bridges at Uppuguda and Kandikal Gate railway gates respectively in the Old City, he said that both the projects were crucial for easing traffic congestion in the Old City. “We will take up works shortly,” said the GHMC Additional Commissioner.

Projects cleared amid protests

July 29: The BBMP council approved infrastructure projects worth Rs 28.32 crore, including widening of a few roads, even as the Opposition Congress staged a protest in the well of the House on Thursday.

The council approved the widening of the Outer Ring Road, construction of an underpass using pre-cast elements at one of the junctions on Dr Rajkumar Road, asphalting and construction of a pedestrian subway on Hosakerehalli Main Road, a facelift for the Yelahanka lake in Byatarayanapura zone, and construction of a railway over bridge near Hoodi and Byappanahalli and a railway under bridge at the FCI godown in KR Puram.

Opposition leaders alleged they were deliberately not provided a copy of the agenda for the council meeting as the mayor wanted to get the projects approved in a hurry. Congress members met BBMP commissioner H. Siddaiah and urged him not to consider the resolutions as they were passed without discussion.

Mr Siddaiah said preparation of the agenda was the prerogative of the mayor, but offered to review the projects approved. Earlier, the Congress members trooped into the well of the House objecting to a comment passed by Basaveshwaranagar corporator H. Padmaraj against Yeshwanthpur corporator Munirathna during a discussion on the nuisance caused by stray dogs in the city.

When Garudacharpalya corporator Pillappa wanted to know what Mr Munirathna had done about stray dogs in his area, Mr Padmaraj piped in saying, “The Parappana Agrahara jail will take good care of him,” in a clear reference to the Sanjana Singh case which has put Mr Muniratna in the dock.

Angry Congress corporators marched into the well of the House demanding an apology from Mr Padmaraj and his suspension from the council. The council was later adjourned for almost three hours. But the furore continued when Mr Padmaraj did not turn up for the post-lunch session.

Although ruling party leader Katte Satya apologised on his behalf, the Congress councillors were not satisfied. However, the council managed to pass nine resolutions amidst the din and mayor S.K. Nataraj adjourned the House.

Road widening brings life to a halt in Sec-8

Chandigarh:  Residents of Sector 8 have virtually been trapped in their houses for the last few days. Due to the road widening work being undertaken by the Municipal Corporation, the area in front of their houses has been dug up, making it difficult for any vehicle to enter and exit.

The civic body began road widening work and recarpeting of in Sector 8 more than a month ago. The road in Sector 8 A was dug up three days ago. The gardens that the residents had set up on the municipal land as well as the driveways that had been extended, have also been torn down to facilitate the work. In the process, deep pits were dug up in front of the residences.

A resident of the area, Rashi, said despite repeated requests to workers in the area, no steps were taken to solve the problem. “Pits were dug up three days ago. Our cars and those of our neighbours got stuck in these pits. We had to seek help of half-a-dozen people to get these out. Everyday, the contractor tells us that some arrangement would be made. But nothing has been done so far,” she said.

Another resident said the whole stretch of the road has been dug up and the contractor seems to have vanished. Area councillor Chander Mukhi Sharma said the officials have been requested a number of times to complete the work at the earliest.
