Total cost of the works is around

Rs. 40 lakh

PUDUCHERRY: Road works were inaugurated in many parts of Oulgaret Municipality on Sunday, including Thirumalai Thayar Nagar, Muthupillaipalayam, Nanbargal Nagar, Ranga Nagar, Ganapathy Nagar and Mairie Oulgaret.

Public Health Minister A. Namassivayam, who also holds the Local Administration portfolio, and Member of Legislative Assembly N.G. Panneerselvam were present. The total cost of the works is around Rs. 40 lakh, allocated through MLA Local Area Development funds, an official of the municipality said.

The lack of proper roads is a problem faced by many residents within the Oulgaret Municipality, especially those living in developing areas. Inconvenience caused by bad roads is at its peak during the monsoon.

Most of the developing areas where the road works were inaugurated have only ‘kuchcha roads.'

Based on complaints received by residents, formation and metalling of these roads has been taken up. The work should be completed in three months, the official said.

“This year, several MLAs have set aside funds for road development works in many parts of the municipality. So, residents may hope to benefit from them,” the official added.

Work in other areas would begin in four months, he said.

Road through MIT to remain open for public use

Pune:  The city improvement committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Friday decided in favour of the residents in the vicinity of the Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT), to keep the road passing through the campus open for public use. The MIT had requested the PMC to turn the land into a residential zone for the institute, which would have restricted the entry of public.

The urban development department had told the PMC to complete a procedure to cancel the 12-metre-wide road in Kothrud survey number 123 part+124 part. The road was earmarked in the Development Plan 1987.

However, the MIT authorities had requested the civic body to convert it into a residential zone. Accordingly, the subject was tabled before the general body, which approved the same and suggestions and objections from citizens were sought. Within a month, four housing societies — Savli Cooperative Housing Society, Shiv Parvati Gruh Rachana Sanstha, Yashashri Cooperative Housing Society and Girija Cooperative Housing Society — and Shiv Sena leader in PMC Shyam Deshpande submitted their objection letters.

Residents in the MIT area demanded that the road should not be cancelled since it was a crucial approach road in the locality and scrapping it would greatly inconvenience the locals.

Taking into consideration the objections raised by the society members, the CIC inspected the road, and after discussion with them, took a decision in favour of these societies.

“Members of Savli society cited that the approach road of the children’s playground of the society goes via this DP road. Hence, it is necessary to keep it open for the public. The decision has come as a relief to the residents and the city improvement committee should be thanked for this,” said Deshpande.
