Panchkula: In order to decongest the Pinjore-Kalka highway, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) will build a 7.3 kilometre long Pinjore bypass connecting Surajpur (a few kilometres before Pinjore) to Baddi.

This will be the second bypass on this stretch — one from Pinjore to Parwanoo is being built by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

HUDA has received approval for the Rs 32-crore project from the Haryana government.

“We propose to construct a six-lane Pinjore bypass for Baddi, which will start around 150 metres ahead of the Surajpur bridge and meet the Pinjore-Nalagarh road near the Aviation Club. The bypass will be 7.3-km long. We plan to start construction by the end of this year,” a senior HUDA official said.

He added that around 250 acres of land has been acquired for the project and tenders will be floated soon.

“The process to get clearance from the Ministry of Environment is on. Once the construction starts, we aim to complete the work within a year,” the official said. “Initially, a three-lane bypass will be constructed, which will be widened into six lanes.”

Former Sector-10 councillor B B Singal said, “This is a welcome step and will go a long way in decongesting traffic on the highway. There have been times when commuters had to face long traffic jams. Also, the condition of the Baddi road is so bad that passing through it is a challenge.”

GHMC stalls widening of 670 roads in city

April 23rd, 2010
April 22: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has halted the grand plans of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) to widen as many as 670 roads in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
The HMDA has proposed to widen the roads in the draft of the revised master plan prepared for the core city. Most of the roads were to be widened up to 100 feet, some of them even up to 150 feet.

The civic body officials said widening of all the 670 roads would not be possible as it would entail acquisition of a large number of private and government properties. Besides, there are several heritage structures on the notified roads.

The GHMC officials have asked HMDA to drop several roads from the list of road widening. They also told their counterparts in HMDA to reduce or narrow down the proposed width to avoid acquisition of private properties. Several properties can be saved if the width is reduced from 100 feet to 70 feet and so on, officials said.

When contacted, the GHMC additional commissioner (Planning), Mr K. Dhanunjaya Reddy, said road widening would be taken up to ease traffic congestion but care would be taken to ensure that minimum number of private properties are affected.

The HMDA director (Planning), Mr A.V. Bhide, said it is the GHMC which has to do the road widening. So, it is their decision whether to go ahead with the proposed width in the master plan or reduce it.

Decision to implement master plan is unilateral: residents

RDA, in its master plan, proposes to widen 18 main roads in the city

It also proposes to widen roads in market areas where encroachments were cleared recently

Raichur: The Raichur City Municipal Council (CMC) has given its approval for widening several roads in the city as proposed by the master plan prepared by the Raichur Development Authority (RDA).

The CMC took a decision in this regard at a meeting held on Monday.

The RDA, in its master plan, has proposed to widen 18 main roads in the city mainly to ease traffic congestion. It also proposes to widen roads up to 60 ft in some of the main market areas in the city where the district administration cleared encroachments recently.

The CMC decision has come as a shock to residents and shopkeepers in areas where the recent drive against encroachments was carried out.

Residents shocked

The CMC decision has come at a time when the district administration is repairing roads, drains and other infrastructure facilities in the main market areas where illegal structures were pulled down. The district administration has also finalised estimates for beautification of a few circles that were cleared of encroachments. The Government has sanctioned Rs. 3 crore for the works.

The residents and shopkeepers at Cloth Bazaar, Harihara Road, S.N.T. Road, Goshala Road, Bhangikunta, Gunj Circle, Mouleshwara Circle, Mahaveer Circle, Teen Khandil and Kati Darwaza Circle had heaved a sigh of relief when the district administration had announced that it would not implement any master plan in these areas. Many of them have started repairs of their buildings.

However, if the CMC goes ahead with its plan to widen the roads (which now have an average width of 30 ft) in these areas further, portions of several buildings will have to be demolished.

These residents are now accusing the CMC of taking a “unilateral” decision with regard to implementing the master plan.

They said the council failed to take people and the district administration into confidence before taking the decision.
