Green signal for road widening

The Kochi Corporation has approved widening of the Vaduthala-Pachalam   Road considering the frequent accidents happening on the narrow roads in the  area. The 23 residents’ association at Vaduthala had submitted a mass petition regarding the issue two months ago.

The suggestion to widen the road was mooted and approved at the council  meeting held the other day. The traffic congestion and accidents on the   narrow road became a cause of concern after new bus services were allotted.

The bus services were allotted as part of the traffic rearrangement  necessitated owing to Metro Rail constructions.

The nod was given to widen the stretch from Vaduthala Railway Gate to Pachalam Junction.

Mayor Tony Chammany announced that Hibi Eden MLA is willing to associate with the project. “The widening will benefit the people coming to the city from Vaduthala. Hibi Eden has expressed willingness to allot Rs 5 lakh for the widening. So, the Corporation will have to find money just for the land acquisition,” said the Mayor.

However, the authorities concerned said the Corporation may have to incur a huge financial burden for the widening. At present, as the Corporation is in a financial crunch, this might be next to impossible.

“Around Rs 1 crore will be needed for land acquisition and rehabilitation as part of the road widening. So, we have suggested widening the road as part of the construction of Vaduthala Railway Over Bridge. Only an onsite visit will only give an idea about how the ROB can be redesigned,” said Town Planning Committee chairperson K J Sohan.

The secretary of Ernakulam District Residents Association Apex Council (EDRAAC) P N Soman, under whom the associations submitted a signature campaign to highlight road development, said the decision is a welcome sign. However, he said, the Vaduthala junction road widening was only one of the issues which was addressed by the Corporation.

“The three roads reaching Vaduthala from the south enters into a bottleneck junction. Once the Railway gate closes down, this part will be completely congested making it difficult for both commuters and pedestrians. Even ambulance get stranded in the traffic chaos,” said Soman.

With an objective to facilitate a robust public transport system to Bhubaneswarites, the State government is contemplating laying a 60-km road by widening the existing road and making new stretches in the Capital City.

To execute the ambitious plan, the government has estimated fund requirement to the tune of Rs. 1300 crore. The proposal was taken up for discussion at the high-level steering committee meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here on Tuesday.

The road, approximately 60-km-long, will connect Lingipur junction on National Highway 316, Jatani Road, Tamando, Chandaka, Nandankanan and Pahala on National Highway 16.

According to sources, the BDA is preparing a detailed project report of four lane road with provision of BRTS corridor of eight metre along the centre of ring road encircling Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation area and a part of Bhubaneswar Development area.

Alignment of the master plan road with width of 200 feet will be changed keeping in mind the road geometrics, village areas and forestland. At present, the by-pass national highway connecting Pitapalli and Baranga is serving as a ring road. Requirement of a ring road is necessary since Bhubaneswar is expanding towards southern direction.

People residing beyond Khandagiri area depend on busy national highway passing through the city to touch Puri-Cuttack road and other localities in northern sector.

Besides, arterial roads inside the city have become crowded during past couple of years. A wide road connecting Biju Patnaik airport and Nandankanan was developed a couple of years ago and it is being considered that the road ease pressure on traffic. However, the road itself became packed during peak hours.

Cause for congestion

High share of personal vehicles in Bhubaneswar is stated to be the reason for congestion on roads.

According to New Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment, traffic data for different intersections and road mid blocks in Bhubaneswar showed that almost all roads have been dominated by the personal vehicles from 45 to 90 per cent of the traffic volume. The proposed master plan road is also likely to have facility to assimilate requirements for Bus Rapid Transit System.

Meanwhile, Bhubaneswar Development Authority has requested the Works Department to take up all proposed master plan roads.

NMMC repairing roads to welcome Lord Ganesha

NAVI MUMBAI: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has begun work on repairing roads in various nodes ahead of Ganeshotsav.

The roads were in a bad shape even before the monsoon started, as they had been dug up by various agencies for civic work. Heavy rains and traffic diversions further damaged the city roads and made travelling very difficult for commuters. But these problems will all be in the past once NMMC completes repairing the roads.

Workers were seen filling potholes and asphalting roads in sector 17, Vashi over the weekend. Work is on at a war footing.

City engineer Mohan Dagaonkar had assured that repairs would be undertaken immediately after rains recede and all roads will be repaired before Ganeshotsav. But the citizens still have their doubts if the repairs will be completed on time. "I doubt if they will repair all the lanes and bylanes. Like every year, they will only asphalt the main roads. Even the method of asphalting is not right. What the city really needs is comprehensive road maintenance plan," said Vashi resident Venugopal Shetty.

Dagaonkar also said that since the roads constructed three months ago have a defect liability period, the contractor will have to repair the damage for free.
