More than 90 per cent potholes fixed, says BMC

More than 90 per cent of potholes on visarjan routes have been fixed, BMC has claimed. Additional municipal commissioner (roads) SVR Srinivas said, "We had planned to get the city roads ready for Ganeshotsav processions. As planned, we managed to cover a lot of ground."

During monsoon this year, 30,000 potholes have been reported in the city. Of these, 600-odd are left, Srinivas said.

However, Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti (BSGSS) said potholes remain on both major and minor roads. "The repair work is confined to big roads, while potholes in small gullies are ignored," said Girish Walawalkar, secretary, BSGSS.

"Ganesh Mandals dig up roads for making pandals. On an average, each mandal creates 8-10 potholes," said Srinivas.

According to BSGSS, there are over 11,500 mandals in the city, of which 200 are big. Walawalkar said, "BMC fines us Rs 2,000 for each spot. We close them right after celebrations. If the BMC fails to complete repair, we will take it up ourselves."

Finally, HMDA wakes up to make outer ring road safer

HYDERABAD: It took 90 deaths and 150 injuries over the past two years for authorities to realise that the Outer Ring Road (ORR) is a death trap. They have finally come out with a multi-pronged measure to prevent road accidents in the eight-lane expressway.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and the Cyberabad traffic police have joined hands to try and stop the recent spurt in road accidents on this stretch. Since many accidents were due to overspeeding, it has been decided to procure vehicles fitted with speed guns and deploy them on five stretches, including Kolluru to Narsingi, Narsingi to Patancheru, Pedda Amberpet to Bongulur, Bongulur to Tukkuguda and Tukkuguda to Shamshabad.

"The ORR has an upper limit of 120 kmph speed. But many vehicles break the speed limit. The other reasons for accidents include drunken driving, wrong routes and parking on ORR," HMDA metropolitan commissioner Neerabh Kumar Prasad said.

Officials said HMDA will appoint contractors for incident management system, including operation and maintenance. The incident management involves road patrols, surveillance, first aid, ambulances and other road safety measures apart from providing crash barriers and other regular maintenance works.

Since it would take some more time to have a traffic system on ORR in place, it has been decided to make arrangements by way of more patrolling to prevent accidents till the full-fledged system comes into place.

The metropolitan commissioner said while the contractors will procure five patrol vehicles (each one for each stretch), ambulance and a crane, the Cyberabad police will procure guns, apart from deploying two patrol vehicles on the Gachibowli to Shamshabad stretch. Base stations for ambulance, crane and first aid centre will be set up at toll administration buildings of ORR.

The traffic police will also use breathalyzers at toll booths to check drivers. The Cyberabad traffic police informed that they were facing manpower issues to deploy dedicated traffic police

and have written to state government for sanction of additional strength for highway policing on ORR. "We are planning to rope in non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to create awareness among the commuters on rash driving on ORR. The representatives of NGOs would distribute pamphlets and explain the causes for road accidents to the commuters at toll booths on ORR," Prasad added.

Highway of death?

As ORR turned into a virtual death trap, authorities have devised a multi-pronged strategy to prevent accidents on the eight-lane expressway

With overspeed being the main reason for accidents, five stretches _ Kolluru to Narsingi, Narsingi to Patancheru, Pedda Amberpet to Bongulur, Bongulur to Tukkuguda and Tukkuguda to Shamshabad _ have been identified for special patrolling

HMDA will soon appoint contractors for incident management system which includes patrolling, surveillance, first aid, ambulances and other road safety measures apart from providing crash barriers and other regular maintenance works

"The ORR has an upper limit of 120 kmph speed. But many vehicles break the speed limit. The other reasons for accidents include drunken driving, wrong routes and parking on ORR," HMDA metropolitan commissioner Neerabh Kumar Prasad said.

R&B to repair roads under GHMC guidance

The Hyderabad circle of roads and buildings department will henceforth work under the supervision of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.

Roads and Buildings department superintendent engineer and executive engineers will work as per the instructions of municipal commissioner MT Krishna Babu in regard to maintenance of R&B roads in Greater Hyderabad limits and an office will be provided to them in the GHMC office for better coordination.

A decision to this effect was taken by  chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at a review meeting on the road works held with ministers and officials at the Secretariat on Friday.

As many 19 arterial roads having a length of 198.48 km in GHMC limits belong to R&B.

Their major stretches have been battered by incessant rains in the last one month and there is a delay on the part of R&B to repair them.

Though some the battered roads belong to R&B, the GHMC is receiving flak from the citizens that it is not recarpeting the damaged roads.

GHMC officials said any damages to roads have to be repaired by the respective departments.

Yet, GHMC is filling up the potholes and making the roads motorable so that people are not put to inconvenience.

The municipal corporation officials told Express that with the government now directing the R&B’s Hyderabad Circle to work under the supervision of GHMC commissioner, M T Krishna Babu, this would help in proper coordination between the two departments in taking up recarpeting of the damaged roads in the twin cities to avoid inconvenience to the motorists.
