Chandigarh:  The civic body will now provide basic facilities to the slums and colonies till the residents are rehabilitated

UT Advisor Pradip Mehra, on Tuesday, approved the proposal of the municipal corporation to provide civic amenities to slums and colonies that are part of the biometric survey. The civic body would now provide basic facilities to the slums and colonies till the residents are rehabilitated.

The proposal was taken up for discussion during the coordination committee meeting of the UT Administration and the municipal corporation. The work for laying of tiles uprooted from other parts of the city had been taken up by the municipal corporation in some colonies.

However, when the work had to be extended to other colonies, the Administration had rejected the proposal. Discussions pertaining to the issue had been held a number of times in the House meet of the corporation. The councillors had stated that the tiles from sectors were being uprooted to lay new ones. Instead of wasting the tiles these should be laid in the colonies and slums. It was proposed that streetlights or high mast lights be provided in the area.

Former Mayor Kamlesh had, during her tenure, also sent a proposal about the same to the Administration. However, it had not been approved. The issue was taken up again with the UT Advisor during the meeting today. The mayor, Municipal Commissioner Dr Roshan Sunkaria as well as other officers were present. Mayor Anu Chatrath said, “The proposal had been rejected by the Home Secretary when we had approached him with it. The Advisor today directed the officials to provide civic amenities in the slums and colonies. The residents are already part of the biometric survey. Till houses under the rehabilitation scheme are completed they should be provided with liveable conditions.”

The Administration has also approved setting up of a mini bus stand in Maloya. The site earmarked for making a green belt in Dhanas would soon be developed. The community centres in various areas would be developed. The Advisor also discussed the issue of the spat between the mayor and commissioner over the inauguration of the green belt in Mauli Jagran.
