Works for mega housing project

Vijayawada, June 29: As part of the mega housing project under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the Vijayawada municipal corporation (VMC) will construct 3,072 G+3 units in Ajit Singh Nagar and Kabela colonies, each unit at a cost of Rs 2.50 lakh.

The VMC proposes to construct 28,152 houses by 2012 under the JNNURM. In all, 8,608 housing units are under construction in Jakkampudi village. Bhumi puja was performed for construction of 3,072 more housing units in Ajit Singh Nagar and Kabela Colony on Tuesday. The Vijayawada MP, Mr Lagadapati Raja-gopal, mayor Ms M.V. Ra-tna Bindu, municipal commissioner G. Ravi Babu, Vijayawada (ce-ntral) MLA Malladi Vishnu, and others attended the bhumi puja.

Speaking on the occasion, the municipal commissioner said that 5,440 houses are nearly complete in the city and another 8,608 houses are under construction in Jakkampudi village. He said that the VMC is holding discussions with farmers in Gollapudi to acquire 110 acre for construction of 11,032 houses.

He he said proposals were made to take up a massive plantation along canals.

Vijayawada MP Mr Lagadapati Rajagopal with officials and MLA Malladi Vishnu inspected the 8,608 houses under construction in Jakkampudi village.

Mr Ravi Babu explained details of the project to the MP. He said that underground drainage, a school-cum-junior college, roads, commercial complex, common community hall would come up here. The MP said that he would try to get the remaining JNNURM funds from the Centre.
