Rs 2,000 cr to get rid of slums

Bengaluru, Nov. 15: The state government has sought the permission of Union government for implementation of a Rs 2,000 crore project to turn 40 towns, coming under seven city corporations, into slum-free urban centres.

Speaking to reporters here on Monday, minister for housing, Katta Subramanya Naidu, said the project aims at providing houses and basic amenities to slum dwellers.

The state would contribute half the cost of the project which would be implemented in phases over a five-year timeframe under the Rajiv Gandhi Awaz programme, he added.

The state, the first one to do so, has completed a survey of all slums.

There are 2,720 slums outside Bengaluru. In the state capital alone, there are 597 slums with 310 of them yet to be officially placed in the category of slums.
