20,000 new economically weaker section houses to be built in 2 years
SURAT: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has taken up its first slum redevelopment project
in Adajan and Pal. It will build 544 economically weaker section (EWS)
houses at the two places where at present slums exist, under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) scheme.
Bhimji Patel, chairman, standing committee, said, "Our target is to build 20,000 EWS houses for urban poor in the city in the coming two years."
These houses will come up at Ektanagar, Adajan and Pal. At Ektanagar site 256 and at Pal site 288 EWS quarters will come up at a total cost of Rs 21.67 crore.
SMC has built nearly 30,000 EWS quarters at Kosad, Behstan and other sites under JnNURM scheme.
A major part of Tapi river bank at Rander and Adajan was cleared by SMC officials and the slum dwellers were rehabilitated at Kosad EWS quarters.
SMC estimates more that than 1.25 lakh people have so far been rehabilitated under EWS scheme and another one lakh people are likely to get relocated in a year's time.
An official from SMC's slum rehabilitation department said, "We plan to replace slums with EWS quarters and relocate the slum dwellers if this is not possible."
