SMC distributes 52,000 applications for 52 houses

Over 52,000 application forms have been distributed by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) for a mere 52 houses built by the corporation for the poor in the city.

The SMC had published advertisements in local dailies, inviting applications from those interested in the houses constructed by the corporation. The civic organisation had also fixed certain eligibility criteria for those who can apply for these houses.

Official sources said that among 52 empty quarters, 13 quarters are under Valmiki Ambedkar Aawas Yojna (VAMBAY scheme), 32 under Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) scheme and 7 under Low Income Group (LIG) scheme.

As per SMC's guidelines, only BPL card owners can file applications under VAMBAY scheme. Applicants whose annual income is Rs 1 lakh or below can apply under EWS scheme.

Those with an annual income of Rs 1-2 lakh can apply for LIG quarters. The forms for such houses were distributed from all the civic centres of SMC between June 17-July 5. The submission of forms started on July 10 and will continue till July 20.
