State survey of slums from February 15, says Minister
Bangalore, Jan 27, DHNS:

The Directorate of Municipal Administration will take up a comprehensive survey of slums in the State, including those in Bangalore, from February 15.
  

Disclosing this to the media in Bangalore, Minister for Municipal Administration Balachandra Jharkiholi said the survey covers various aspects such as population, geographical boundary, economic status of the dwellers and civic amenities of slums. The survey will be completed in six months.

Sponsored by the Union Government, the survey findings will help both the Centre and the State governments in planning and drafting of policies. It will also facilitate in the effective implementation of urban poverty alleviation programmes, he added.

There are an estimated 2,181 declared slums and 495 undeclared slums in the State. A survey of slums was last done a decade ago, he said. Besides, the minister said the Directorate has collected Rs 152.10 crore as property tax till the end of December 2009 against the target of Rs 197 crore for the fiscal 2009-10. This is excluding the eight city corporations.
