Mayor’s Tamil Nadu formula for RAY

Special Correspondent

Mayor Mohd. Majid Hussain has mooted collecting only 10 per cent of the cost from beneficiaries, and the rest will be borne by Central and State Governments for slum redevelopment projects under the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) as is done in Tamil Nadu.

At a meeting with officials of the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) and the GHMC, he was told by RAY’s regional coordinator that the slums redevelopment programme was progressing rapidly in Tamil Nadu once the government there took up 40 per cent contribution.

The Mayor asked officials to prepare detailed project reports. Women self-help groups should be involved while preparing the reports, he said and wanted works in slums at Attapur, Shivarampally, Addagutta and Ismail Nagar to be taken up soon. The survey of slums of Narsimha basthi, Ambedkar Nagar, IDH Colony and New Indira Nagar at Kapra has already commenced, Engineer-in-chief R. Dhan Singh said.

MMRDA flats for residents in ‘rickety’ buildings

MUMBAI: The MMRDA has leased out rental houses to the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).

The civic body will now allot these houses on live and license basis to residents staying in 61 extremely dangerous buildings in the district.

In light of the tragic Mumbra building collapse in April, CM Prithviraj Chavan had issued orders to shift the 80,000 people residing in these buildings to the rental houses developed by MMRDA.

With monsoon around the corner, Chavan had last week ordered that the relocation exercise be carried out within a fortnight.

On Tuesday, MMRDA commissioner UPS Madan agreed to lease out 3,000 odd rental houses on lease to the TMC.

It was decided to allot these houses on long lease to the TMC at nominal rates.

The TMC, in turn, has been allowed to allot these on live and license to the oustees.

The civic body will have to decide the terms and conditions and the rentals for the live and license arrangement, sources said.

With the government planning a drive to relocate residents staying in illegal rickety buildings in Thane, senior officials said the rental houses will serve as transit accommodation for the oustees.

Stone laid for roads

Staff Reporter

Visakhapatnam South MLA Dronamraju Srinivasa Rao on Tuesday laid the foundation for works worth Rs.7 lakh for basic amenities like roads and drains at Edugulla slum at Allipuram.

This was made possible by the formation of “basti” committee by Campaign for Housing And Tenurial Rights and negotiating with GVMC, according to Pragada Vasu of CHATRI. Municipal Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana visited the slum and agreed to provide the amenities.

The slum was declared a notified slum by GVMC but some court cases over the ownership of land delayed the much-needed amenities to the 64 families living there.
