These houses will come up at Ektanagar, Adajan and Pal. At Ektanagar site 256 and at Pal site 288 EWS quarters will come up at a total cost of Rs 21.67 crore.

SMC has built nearly 30,000 EWS quarters at Kosad, Behstan and other sites under JnNURM scheme.

A major part of Tapi river bank at Rander and Adajan was cleared by SMC officials and the slum dwellers were rehabilitated at Kosad EWS quarters.

SMC estimates more that than 1.25 lakh people have so far been rehabilitated under EWS scheme and another one lakh people are likely to get relocated in a year's time.

An official from SMC's slum rehabilitation department said, "We plan to replace slums with EWS quarters and relocate the slum dwellers if this is not possible."

Corporators want slums upto 2000 rehabililated as project affected

MUMBAI: Corporators across parties have demanded that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) consider 2000 as the cut off date for giving alternate accommodation to the slums alongside of the Tansa pipeline.

Following guidelines from the High Court the BMC has been taking action against slums alongside 10 metres of the Tansa pipeline in the city.

The BMC undertook demolition in G-north (Dharavi, Mahim) and South (Bhandup) ward in November 2011, and in that drive the BMC gave alternate accommodation to slums dwellers who were there before 1995.

Since then no demolition has taken, only notices are being served due to the lack of tenentments for PAP's. But the corporators say that when slums coming in way of metro and mono rail projects and projects on the airport authority the cut off date is 2000 and so even for the BMC projects the same cut off line should be followed.

There is a court case pending in the Supreme Court in which the cut off line will be decided. Slums that exists before the cut off line are treated as legal and are given alternate accommodation when being evicted.

Ramesh Korgaonkar said that slums that there demolished and if they were after 1995 and before 2000 should be given alternate accommodation.

BMC administration clarified that the datum line for proving the slums legal will remain as 1995 for all its projects including the Tansa pipeline slum removal project.

Sandeep Deshpande, MNS corporator said that if the slums before 2000 are given alternate accommodation and if the SC verdict is not in favour of extending the datum line will the BMC strip the poor slum dwellers off their homes.

NMC allots 80 houses under JNNURM scheme

NASHIK: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) allotted 80 houses to the beneficiaries of the slum rehabilitation project under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme at Nilgiri Baug, Aurangabad Road, Panchavati, by drawing lots on Thursday. The chits were picked by the beneficiaries.

This is the first exercise of allotting houses under the scheme. Around 200 beneficiaries were present on the occasion. The remaining houses will be allotted in the consequent phases.

Slum rehabilitation officer of the civic body Yashwant Ogle said the next draw of lots will be held after eight days. The housing project at Nilgiri Baug has 720 housing units. The first building is ready for which the houses were allotted on Thursday.

"We will immediately shift the beneficiaries to the houses. They will check everything in their housing units, including light, water and other connections. There are water and light connections provided in the units. The beneficiaries can contact the public works department if they face any problem," said Ogle.

The civic body had, in January, announced that it would allot 3,000 houses to the beneficiaries in the first phase in March by drawing lots. On Thursday it made the opening and this would go on step by step till all the units are allocated.

Chairman of the standing committee Uddhav Nimse, city engineer Sunil Khune, deputy municipal commissioner (tax) R M Bahiram, Panchavati divisional officer, R R Gosavi, engineers of Panchavati division, Ogle and his team from the slum rehabilitation department were present on the occasion.

Incidentally, the JNNURM housing project, being executed by the NMC, was initiated in 2008 but got delayed due to various reasons. While the civic body has got an approval to build 16,000 houses, it has set a target of 12,200 houses citing scarcity of land as the reason. Around 8,000 houses are in the various stages of construction at 11 locations in the city.
